The role of motivation in the academic resilience of Czech students in the PISA 2022 mathematics test: A comparison of analytical approaches

Abstract:

V diplomové práci se zabývám akademickou resiliencí českých žáků. Prvním cílem je prozkoumat faktory, které zvyšují akademickou resilienci žáků vůči negativnímu vlivu socioekonomického statusu. Zaměřuji se na motivační charakteristiky vycházející z teorie očekávání a hodnoty. Druhým cílem je porovnání výsledků čtyř přístupů k operacionalizaci a měření akademické resilience. Využívám data z testování PISA 2022 od 8460 patnáctiletých českých žáků. Jednotlivé modely se lišily v nalezených výsledcích, a proto nebylo možné jednoznačně podpořit hypotézy týkající se souvislosti mezi motivačními faktory a akademickou resiliencí. Hlavním zjištěním tohoto výzkumu je, že volba přístupu k operacionalizaci a měření resilience souvisí s výsledky analýz. Tato práce slouží jako prvotní sonda do doposud málo prozkoumané oblasti, poukazuje ale na možné pochybnosti ohledně dosud publikovaných studií a v nich nalezených efektech různých proměnných ovlivňujících akademickou resilienci. Další výzkum by se měl zaměřit na teoretické ukotvení tohoto konstruktu a na to, proč a jak různé přístupy k akademické resilienci ovlivňují výsledky. Měl by případně dospět k volbě takového přístupu, který nejlépe odráží naši představu o tomto konstruktu.

Abstract:

In my thesis, I focus on the academic resilience of Czech students. The primary aim is to explore factors that enhance students' academic resilience against the negative influence of socioeconomic status. I focus on motivational characteristics derived from the expectancy-value theory. The secondary aim is to compare the results of four approaches to operationalizing and measuring academic resilience. I utilize data from the PISA 2022 test, involving 8460 Czech fifteen-year-old students. The different measurement models yielded varying results, making it impossible to uniformly support hypotheses regarding the relationship between motivational factors and academic resilience. The main finding of this research is that the choice of approach to operationalizing and measuring resilience is linked to the results of analyses. This work serves as an initial exploration into a relatively unexplored area. However, it points out possible doubts concerning previously published studies and the effects of various variables influencing academic resilience. Further research should focus on the theoretical grounding of this construct and why and how different approaches to academic resilience affect results. It should possibly lead to choosing an approach that best reflects our understanding of this construct.
