Delaying payments after the financial crisis: Evidence from European Union Companies

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá dopadem finanční krize v letech 2007–2008 na opožděné platby nefinančních korporací v členských zemích Evropské unie. Studie se snaží posoudit specifické charakteristiky firem, zejména pohledávky, ziskovost, likviditu, velikost firmy a finanční páku, která ovlivnila dopad krize likvidity na opožděné platby. Analýza panelových dat byla provedena na 54.277 společnostech v letech 2005–2014. Opožděné platby byly nejprve analyzovány spolu s včasnými platbami a následně byly vybrány pouze opožděné platby. Regresní analýza zahrnovala několik postupů, zejména náhodné efekty v binomické regresi, vícestupňovou regresi a dynamickou regresi.Výsledky ukázaly, že firmy mohly uprostřed finanční krize redukovat opožděné platby prostřednictvím prodloužení délky splatnosti pohledávek, ziskovostí firmy a obratem. Naopak navýšení finanční páky a velikost firem měřená celkovými aktivy měla na opožděné platby negativní vliv. Navíc, firmy ve finanční tísni byly ve srovnání s ostatními mnohem citlivější na zvýšení obratu ve smyslu redukce délky opožděných plateb. Nepříznivý dopad finanční krize byl pozorován především v letech 2008–2010, ve srovnání s třemi lety před a po tomto období. Nepříznivý vliv finanční krize na opožděné platby se tak v průběhu času snižuje. Navíc firmy, které měly největší problémy s opožděnými platbami, mají k těmto problémům tendenci i nadále.

Abstract:

The dissertation investigates economic impacts of the financial crisis of 2007-2008 on delay in payments of accounts receivable of non-financial companies in European Union member countries. Therefore, the study sought to assess the firm specific characteristics of receivables, profitability, liquidity, firm size, and financial leverage, which affects impact of the current liquidity crisis on payments delay. To achieve this, a panel count data of delay in payments of invoices of over half a million observations of 54,277 firms for the period 2005-2014 inclusive was analyzed. The delay in payments was first analyzed by considering the inclusion of prompt payments of invoices and then a second analysis was undertaken of only firms’ delay in payments without prompt payments. The random-effects negative binomial regressions, multilevel regressions, and dynamic regressions analysis were undertaken.The results show that amidst adverse impact of the financial crisis, EU companies could improve payments delay with increase in the credit period, firm’s profitability, and firm’s turnover. However, the increase in financial leverage and firms size measure of total assets will increase delay in payments. More importantly, financial constrained firms was found to be comparably more sensitive to increase in turnover as a means to reduce payments delay. The adverse impacts of the crisis was observed to be more severe within the three years of 2008-2010, compare to the three years before and the three years after. Therefore, the adverse impacts of financial crisis on delay in payments reduces as the years gets far from the financial crisis. Also, the firms was found to be distinct in terms of payments delay with firms that delay in payments having the tendency to delay in future payments.
