Literary and philosophical portrait of tyrant in Seneca's tragedies Thyestes and Agamemnon

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the literary and philosophical portrait of tyrant in Seneca´s tragedies Thyestes and Agamemnon. After the introduction into the issues of tyranny and its development in Greek and Roman society, the author briefly outlines the mythological background of the tragedies and their earlier versions, while contemplating the ancient image of ideal king as opposed to that of tyrant. The core of the thesis contains the analysis of tyrant´s typical characteristics criticised by Seneca in his works as well as the important tyrannical motifs present in his tragedies. The last part of the thesis is concerned with the didactic dimension of Seneca´s works and its actual application in the tragedies. The aim of the thesis is to prove that Seneca´s portrait of tyrant, although to some extent owing to the earlier tradition, is the product of the stoic ideals as well as reflexion of the era which he lived in.

Abstract:

Náplňou práce je Senecovo literárne a filozofické zobrazenie tyrana v tragédiách Thyestes a Agamemnón. Po stručnom uvedení do problematiky tyranie ako štátneho zriadenia a jej vývoja vo vnímaní gréckej a rímskej spoločnosti uvádza autorka do mytologického pozadia a skorších spracovaní skúmaných tragédií, pričom sa zamýšľa i nad antickými predstavami o ideálnom vládcovi ako protiklade k tyranovi. Jadro práce tvorí analýza typických charakteristických znakov tyrana, ktoré Seneca pranieruje vo svojich dielach, a jednotlivých významných tyranských motívov prítomných v tragédiách. Posledná časť práce je venovaná didaktickému rozmeru Senecovho diela a jeho konkrétnemu uplatneniu v tragédiách. Cieľom práce je dokázať, že i keď je Senecov obraz tyrana do istej miery poplatný skoršej tradícii, je jeho spracovanie problematiky produktom stoických predstáv o ideálnej forme vlády, a zároveň reflexiou historickej reality, v ktorej žil.
