Parental mediation of online interactions: How mothers mediate their children's interactions with unknown people on the internet

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá tématem rodičovské mediace online interakcí. Cílem práce je prostřednictvím kvalitativní metody zjistit, jak matky dospívajících dětí ve věku 11-14 let přistupují k online interakcím s neznámými lidmi u svých dospívajících dětí. Pro získávání dat autorka využívá metodu hloubkových rozhovorů. Práce je členěna na teoretickou, metodologickou a analytickou část. Teoretická část pojednává o kontextu rodičovské mediace online interakcí dětí s neznámými lidmi na internetu. V metodologické části nás autorka seznamuje s výzkumným vzorkem a procesem sběru dat. A poslední analytická část práce se věnuje zodpovězení výzkumné otázky a analýze získaných dat a jejich interpretaci. Z analytické části práce vyplývá, že všechny dotazové matky považují online i offline interakce u svých dětí za riziko, kterému ale v kontextu rodičovské mediace nevěnují tolik pozornosti jako jiným subtématům. Konkrétní strategie rodičovské mediace online interakcí matky volí na základě několika faktorů, mezi které patří především věk, povaha a online aktivity dítěte a také celkový přístup matky k výchově či její dosavadní zkušenosti s online interakcemi.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the parental mediation of the online interactions. The aim of this thesis is to find out, by qualitative research, how mothers mediate the interactions of their children between the ages of 11-14 years with strangers on the internet. To collect the data, the author uses the method of In-Depth Interviews. The thesis is divided into three main chapters – theoretical, methodological and analytical chapter. The theoretical chapter presents the context of the parental mediation of children’s interactions with strangers on the internet. The methodological chapter introduces the research sample and the data collection methods. Lastly, the analytical chapter presents analysed findings and their interpretation and answers the research question. The analytical chapter of the thesis implies that all of the interviewed mothers consider their children's online and offline interactions to be a risk. However, in the context of parental mediation mothers don't pay as much attention to it as to other subtopics. The research concludes that the strategy of parental mediation of online interactions is influenced by: age, child's nature and online activity, child's upbringing and mother's previous experience with online interactions.
