Relationships between testate amoebae species composition and environmental factors in mires of the West Carpathians

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá vztahy mezi společenstvy krytenek (Amoebozoa: Arcellinida & Rhizaria: Euglyphida), složením vegetace a faktory vnějšího prostředí podél celého gradientu minerální bohatosti na rašeliništích v Západních Karpatech. Celkem bylo na studovaných lokalitách nalezeno 75 druhů krytenek. Počty druhů i abundance jedinců klesaly se snižujícími se hodnotami pH vody. Hlavní ekologický gradient, ovlivňující druhové složení společenstev krytenek, byl gradient minerální bohatosti a druhý významný gradient byl gradient výšky hladiny vody. Nejvýznamnější vysvětlující proměnné ze všech 18 sledovaných proměnných (chemismus vody a výška hladiny podzemní vody, Ellenbergovy indikační hodnoty, první čtyři osy detrendované korespondeční analýzy společenstev rostlin) byly pH prostředí (vyjádřené buď pomocí pH vody nebo průměrnou Ellenbergovou indikační hodnotou pro půdní reakci) a výška hladiny podzemní vody. Pro tyto dva faktory prostředí byly vytvořeny predikční modely na základě přenosových funkcí (Transfer functions), které umožňují, prostřednictvím druhového složení společenstev krytenek, rekonstrukci nebo predikci ekologických podmínek na rašeliništích v Západních Karpatech s predikční chybou ±0,65 pro pH a ±7,05 cm pro výšku hladiny podzemní vody. Výsledky této práce obecně odpovídají jiným ekologickým studiím o krytenkách z různých oblastí světa. Na rozdíl od většiny z nich, ale popisují změny druhového složení podél kompletního gradientu pH. Zjištěný silný vztah mezi pH a druhovým složením krytenek vyzdvihuje přínos těchto jednobuněčných organismů v paleoekologických studiích.

Abstract:

In this thesis I studied the relationships between testate amoeba assemblages (Amoebozoa: Arcellinida & Rhizaria: Euglyphida), species composition of the vegetation and measured environmental variables along the complete poor-rich gradient in mires of the West Carpathians. A total number of 75 testate amoebea taxa were recorded in the mires studied. The species richness and abundances decreased with decreasing pH. I found that the major ecological gradient in testate amoeba species data was the poor-rich gradient, while the second most important factor was depth to the water table (DWT). From all 18 studied variables (water chemistry and DWT, Ellenberg indicator values, first four axes of detrended correspondence analysis of vegetation), pH (expressed either by water pH or by mean Ellenberg indicator value for base saturation) and DWT were the most important factors for explaining variation in testate amoebae species composition. For these two important variables I constructed predictive Transfer functions models, which allow reconstruction or prediction of ecological condition in mires of the Western Carpathians with mean errors of ±0.65 for pH and ±7.05 cm for DWT. My results are generally consistent with other studies on testate amoeba ecology from other regions, but contrary to most of them they describe species composition changes along the complete pH gradient. The strong correlation between pH and testate amoebae species composition highlights the importance of these unicellular organisms in paleoecology.
