Designing a methodology for disruptive business model innovation

Abstract:

Inovace obchodních modelů získávají v posledních letech rostoucí zájem vědy a manažerské praxe. Do značné míry to lze připsat jednomu společnému jevu, který se vyskytuje v různých průmyslových odvětvích. Začínající společnosti úspěšně využívají nově vznikající technologie a nadcházející trendy k tomu, aby zpochybnily stávající trhy. Zavádějí obchodní modely, které uspokojují potřeby spotřebitelů jiným, ale podstatě lepším způsobem než zavedené subjekty. V důsledku toho se stávající podniky potýkají s výrazným poklesem příjmů, nebo se dokonce stávají pro spotřebitele zcela irelevantními. Tento jev je charakterizován jako „narušení“. Vzhledem k hrozbě, kterou narušení představuje pro zavedené společnosti, je zřejmé,že inovace obchodního modelu pro boj s narušením nebo dokonce vlastní uplatnění modelu narušení, představuje v současné době primární úkol řízení. S ohledem na tuto potřebu vědci vyvinuli různé přístupy k inovacím obchodních modelů. Poznali také, že zavedené společnosti čelí při inovacích obchodních modelů zvláštním výzvám. Současný akademický výzkum považuje zavedenou dominantní logiku řízení společnosti za hlavní překážku bránící inovačnímu procesu. Tato dominantní logika je charakterizována jako sdílená, obecná mentální struktura, která filtruje a aplikuje externí informace na základě zkušeností a poznatků získaných implementací zavedeného obchodního modelu. Myšlení manažerů je tedy omezeno z hlediska schopnosti identifikovat příležitosti k narušení a konceptualizovat je do obchodních modelů, které leží mimo dominantní logiku. Nicméně, i když věda uznala existenci dominantní logiky v rámci zavedených společností, tento aspekt je zřídka zohledňován v rámci současných akademických přístupů k inovacím obchodního modelu. Tato disertační práce uznává "oslepující"vliv dominantní logiky, a snaží se zaplnit současnou mezeru ve výzkumu. Práce upozorňuje na překážku, kterou dominantní logika představuje v celém inovačním procesu obchodního modelu, a umožňuje lépe pochopit její vliv na ni. Kromě toho navrhuje metodiku, která zahrnuje konkrétně sestavené nástroje a metody, které řídí proces "odučení"dominantní logiky a současně usnadňují tvorbu inovací obchodního modelu s „rušivým“ potenciálem. Přesněji řečeno, obchodní metodika ˇreší dominantní logiku v rámci inovačních fází obchodního modelu analýzy a tvorby. To umožňuje důkladnou analýzu firemního ekosystému s cílem odhalit příležitosti k narušení a dále usnadnit vytváření obchodních modelů, které zajistí jejich úspěšné využití. Metodika tedy slouží jako základ pro vytváření inovací obchodního modelu s rušivým potenciálem v manažerské praxi. Kromě toho představuje základ pro další hloubkové empirické výzkumné studie.

Abstract:

Business model innovation has received increasing interest within science and managerial practice over the last years. To a considerable extent, this can be attributed to one common phenomenon that has been occurring across various industries. Start-up companies success-fully utilize emerging technologies and upcoming trends to challenge existing markets. They implement business models that fulfill consumers’ needs in a different, yet substantially better way, than those of the incumbents do. As a result, existing firms face significant revenue decreases or even become outright irrelevant to consumers. This phenomenon is character-ized as disruption. Considering the threat that disruption poses to established companies, it becomes obvious that innovating the business model to combat disruption or even become a disruptive pioneer oneself, presents the primary management task at present. Accordingly, scientists developed various approaches on business model innovation. Further-more, it has been recognized that established companies face particular challenges during business model innovation. Current academic research considers the company’s established dominant management logic to be the main barrier hindering the innovation process. This dominant logic is characterized as a shared, general mental structure that filters and applies external information based on the experiences and learnings gained by executing the estab-lished business model. Therefore, managers’ thinking is constrained in a way that they are unable to identify opportunities for disruption and conceptualize according business models that lay outside the dominant logic. However, although science has recognized the existence of a dominant logic within established companies, this aspect is seldom considered within current academic approaches on business model innovation. This dissertation acknowledges the blinding effect of dominant logic and, thus, attempts to fill the current research gap. The present research draws attention to the obstacle dominant logic constitutes along the business model innovation process and allows for a better understand-ing of its influence thereon. Moreover, it introduces a business methodology that incorporates specifically compiled tools and methods to guide the process of unlearning the dominant logic, while simultaneously facilitating the generation of a business model innovation with disruptive potential. More specifically, the business methodology addresses the dominant logic within the business model innovation phases of analysis and creation. This enables a thorough analysis of the firm’s eco-system to detect disruptive opportunities and further facilitates the creation of business models that ensure a successful exploitation thereof. Therefore, the business methodology serves as basis for generating business model innovation with disruptive potential in managerial practice. Apart from this, it constitutes a groundwork for further in-depth empirical research studies.
