Word as a Weapon. Signs of Nationalism in Selected Czech Newspapers and Magazines of 19th Century.

Abstract:

Cílem této dizertační práce je sledovat konkrétní projevy nacionalismu ve vybraných tiskovinách. Práce se zabývá persvazivní funkcí jednotlivých článků. Na základě studia novinových článků bylo zjištěno, jaké myšlenky Češi proklamovali a jaké byly jejich požadavky v různých dějinných úsecích 19. století. Kritériem zkoumání byly určité historické mezníky 19. století, které korespondují s vyhrocenými společenskými událostmi. Byly to např. roky 1834, 1848, 1867, 1871, 1880, 1895 aj. Práce si všímá proměn tematiky, jazyka a stylu jednotlivých vybraných textů. Posuzuje také míru a způsoby vyjadřování expresivity a emocionality v příspěvcích vztahujících se k jazykovému nacionalismu (např. agresivitu ve vztahu k němčině, nekritičnost a nadhodnocování ve vztahu k češtině a k jiným slovanským jazykům), formy argumentace apod.

Abstract:

The goal of this thesis is to observe specific signs of nationalism in selected printed periodics. The thesis analyses the persuasive function of individual articles. Finding out which thoughts Czechs declared and what were their requests in different historical periods of 19th century, was based on studying of the newspaper articles. The standards for the analysis were certain historical turning points of 19th century, which correspond with social turmoils. These were, for example, years 1834, 1848, 1867, 1871, 1880, 1895 etc. The thesis compares the changes in themes, language and style of individual selected texts. It also evaluates the extent and ways of expressivity and emotionality of the articles related to the linguistic nationalism (for example, aggression towards German, being uncritcal and overvaluing in relation to Czech and other Slavic languages, forms of argumentation etc.).
