Abstract:

The title of the thesis is Erskine Caldwell´s Southern Rural Naturalism. The aim of this thesis is to identify and analyze the naturalistic features in selected Caldwell´s works. The thesis stresses the key issues that Caldwell uses in his depiction of life of the lowest social classes in the American South, with special focus on the social class of sharecroppers. The thesis is divided into six chapters. First chapter presents basic facts about Erskine Caldwell. The second chapter analyzes the novel Tobacco Road, concentrating on the theme of disintegration of the family and depiction of characters. The third chapter analyzes the novel God´s Little Acre, focusing on the role of social determinism in characters´ life, sexuality as a major topic in the novel, and use of repetition. The fourth chapter deals with the major themes depicted in the novel Trouble in July, stressing the topic of racial prejudice and depiction of characters. In fifth chapter, the novel Tragic Ground is analyzed, focusing mainly on the theme of poverty and the way characters deal with it. The sixth chapter focuses on the analysis of Caldwell´s collection of short stories Kneel to the Rising Sun, stressing the important topics that contribute to the naturalistic concept of Caldwell´s work. The conclusion summarizes the results of the analysis, stressing naturalistic features and themes observed in Caldwell´s works, selected for this thesis. The list of primary and secondary literary sources used for the thesis is given in the last page of the thesis.

Abstract:

Název této diplomové práce je Jižanský Venkovský Naturalismus Erskina Caldwella. Cílem této práce je analyzovat prvky naturalismu ve vybraných Caldwellových dílech. Práce zdůrazňuje témata, která Caldwell využívá k popisu života příslušníků nejnižších společenských vrstev Amerického Jihu se zvláštním zaměřením na skupinu podílníků na sklizni. Diplomová práce je rozdělena do šesti kapitol. První kapitola uvádí základní fakta o Erskinu Caldwellovi. Druhá kapitola analyzuje román Tabáková Cesta, kde je jako hlavní téma rozebírán rozpad rodiny a Caldwellovo pojetí postav. Třetí kapitola se zaměřuje na román Boží Políčko, přičemž v centru pozornosti je sociální determinismus v životě postav, pojetí sexuality jakožto hlavního tématu knihy a využití repetice. Čtvrtá kapitola se zabývá nejdůležitějšími tématy v románu Trápení v Červenci, se zaměřením na téma rasových předsudků a pojetí postav. V páté kapitole je analyzován román Tragický Kus Země, kde je rozebíráno téma chudoby a způsoby, jakými se s ní postavy vyrovnávají. Šestá kapitola je věnována Caldwellově povídkové tvorbě, konkrétně sbírce Kneel to the Rising Sun, kde jsou analyzována hlavní témata, která přispívají k naturalistickému pojetí Caldwellovy tvorby. V závěru práce jsou shrnuty výsledky analýzy a jsou zde uvedeny sledované naturalistické prvky, které se vyskytují ve vybraných románech a povídkách Erskina Caldwella. Seznam primární i sekundární literatury, použité pro tuto diplomovou práci, je uveden na poslední straně práce.
