Factors influencing the breeding of the Montagu's Harrier (Circus pygargus)

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je vyhodnotit faktory, které ovlivňují úspěšnost hnízdění motáka lužního (Circus pygargus). Sledovaná hnízda pocházejí z oblasti Moravskoslezského kraje, Olomouckého kraje, západního Slovenska a Saska-Anháltska v Německu. Mezi zkoumané prvky patří: predace, vliv počasí, neúspěšnost hnízdění způsobená lidskou činností, vzdálenost hnízd k vybraným krajinným prvkům, nadmořská výška, rozloha pole s hnízdem, semikolonialita hnízdění, ochrana hnízda, biotop v místě hnízdění a diverzita biotopů v jeho okolí. Nejčastěji zjištěnou příčinou neúspěšného hnízdění byla predace (9,2 % sledovaných hnízd), dále také lidská činnost (1,9 % sledovaných hnízd) a nepřízeň počasí (1,2 % sledovaných hnízd). Ze sledovaných prvků měla prokazatelný vliv na úspěšnost nadmořská výška, jejíž optimum bylo v 150-200 m n. m. Dalším významným prvkem byla vzdálenost hnízda k nejbližšímu remízu, u které se zobecněným lineárním modelem s binomickým rozdělením úspěšných a neúspěšných hnízdění ukázalo, že čím dále od remízu hnízda jsou, tím menší je pravděpodobnost přežití mláďat. Významný prvkem je podle tohoto modelu také počet druhů polních plodin ve vzdálenosti 1 km od hnízda, jejichž vyšší počet zvyšuje šanci na úspěšné vyhnízdění daného páru. Ochrana hnízd, jejíž metodika je ve sledovaných oblastech mírně odlišná, měla na úspěšné hnízdění rozdílný efekt, zatímco v Německu nejvíce zvyšovala pravděpodobnost přežití alespoň jednoho mláděte (o 47 % oproti nechráněným hnízdům), ochrana hnízd v České republice nejvíce zvyšovala počet přeživších mláďat (o 0,9 mláděte na hnízdo oproti nechráněným hnízdům).

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to evaluate factors that influence the breeding success of Montagu´s Harrier (Circus pygargus). Monitored nests originated from the areas of: Moravian-Silesian region, Olomouc region, western Slovakia and Saxony-Anhalt in Germany. The researched factors are: predation, influence of weather, human caused unsuccessfulness of nests, distance from nests to selected landscape objects, altitude, area of land or field where the nest was found, semicoloniality of nesting, nest protection, biotopes in the nesting area and the diversity of biotopes in its surroundings. The most common factor influencing the unsuccessfulness of nests was predation (9,2 % of monitored nests). Other factors were agricultural activity (1,9 % of monitored nests) and bad weather conditions (1,2 % of monitored nests). Altitude had a provable influence on success rate, the optimal range was 150-200 m a. s. l. Another important factor was the distance from the nest to the nearest forest. In a generalized linear model with binomical distribution of successful and unsuccessful nests, it was exhibited that the greater the distance to the forest, the lower the success rate was. In addition, this model showed that the number of field crops in a distance of 1 km from the nest played a factor. The more crops that were in the surroundings, the greater the success rate of the nests. Nest protection was done with a slightly different methodology in all areas and its effect was different. In Germany, this practice greatly improved the possibility of survival of at least one fledgling from the nest (protected nests had a 47 % better chance of success than unprotected nests), meanwhile, in the Czech Republic it greatly improved the number of survived fledglings (0,9 fledglings more than in unprotected nests).
