The Political Economy of Secession in Europe

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá ekonomickým rozměrem secesionistických, separatistických a nezávislostních tendencí v Evropské unii. Je příspěvkem k hlubšímu porozumění faktorům, které ovlivňují individuální rozhodování o secesi. Cílem práce je (1) vymezit příčiny secesionistických procesů a (2) určit jejich význam pro občany evropských secesních regionů a odhadnout, jakou roli hrají romantické a ekonomické faktory v individuální secesní užitkové funkci. Výzkum je založen na unikátním průzkumu mezi členy secesionistických a regionalistických stran a hnutí napříč 56 evropskými regiony v 17 státech. Vliv ekonomických a romantických faktorů na secesní tlaky byl studován pomocí nástrojů politické ekonomie konfliktu. Práce propojuje romantické faktory, jako je jazyk, víra nebo etnicita, s ekonomickými faktory. Aplikovány jsou také postupy mikroekonomické analýzy, které umožňují identifikovat vliv individuálních prosecesních faktorů.

Abstract:

This dissertation examines secessionism, separatism, and calls for independence in the European Union in recent history and within an economic context. It contributes to the deeper understanding of factors influencing the individual decision-making processes around secession, using economic analysis to answer a set of simple questions about who the secessionists are, what they really want, what their incentives are, and why it is easier to declare their secessionist tendencies than to vote for secession. Two main objectives are identified to reach the aim: (1) Establishing causes of the secessionist processes. (2) Determining their importance for the citizens of the European secessionist regions and estimating the contribution of the romantic as well as economic factors to their secessionist utility function. It is based on an exclusive survey carried out among members of the pro-independence parties and movements across 56 European regions in 17 countries. It uses the instruments of the Political Economy of Conflict to reveal the importance of romantic and economic factors influencing the drive towards secession. This dissertation connects the sensibility of romantic factors such as language, religion or ethnicity with the sense of economic factors through its rational, economic approach. Furthermore, it applies the standard methodology of microeconomic analysis to discover the impact of individual pro-secessionist factors.
