NGO communication on women's rights - a case study Afghanistan

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá komunikací nevládních organizací v oblasti ženských práv v Afghánistánu. Situace v Afghánistánu se po převzetí moci Tálibánem dostala do téměř nekontrolovatelného stavu a v zemi dochází k opakovanému porušování lidských a ženských práv. Pro účely práce byly ke komparaci vybrány nevládní organizace Amnesty International a Human Rights Watch, jelikož se jedná o jedny z největších a nejvlivnějších mezinárodních nevládních organizací na světě. Cílem práce bylo zjistit, jakým způsobem vybrané organizace Amnesty International a Human Rights Watch fungují v oblasti framingu a prezentování problematiky ženských práv veřejnosti. V bakalářské práci je použita obsahová analýza textu. Jedná se o analýzu vybraných dokumentů v programech Voyant tools a Seoscout, kde byl například porovnáván celkový počet slov, nejvíce se vyskytující slova či emoční sentiment vět. Analýzou bylo zjištěno, že obě organizace ve svých výzkumech a kampaních hojně využívají negativně zabarvené věty, aby ve čtenáři vyvolaly různé emoce. V počtu slov se nejvíce objevovalo slovo žena a analýza kampaní ukázala, že organizace velmi často zaměňují některá přídavná jména citově zabarvenějšími synonymy, čímž se taktéž potvrzuje využívání framingu.

Abstract:

The bachelor's thesis deals with NGO communication in the field of women's rights in Afghanistan. The situation in Afghanistan has reached an almost uncontrollable state after the Taliban took power and there are repeated human and women's rights violations in the country. For the purpose of this paper, the NGOs selected for comparison were Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, as they are among the largest and most influential international NGOs in the world. The aim of the thesis was to find out how the selected organisations, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, work in the area of framing and presenting women's rights issues to the public. Content analysis of the text is used in the bachelor thesis. This involves the analysis of selected documents in Voyant tools and Seoscout, where for example the total number of words, the most occurring words or the emotional sentiment of sentences were compared. The analysis revealed that both organisations make extensive use of negatively coloured sentences in their research and campaigns to evoke different emotions in the reader. In word count, the word 'woman' was the most frequent and the analysis of the campaigns showed that the organisations very often replace some adjectives with more emotionally tinged synonyms, thus also confirming the use of framing.
