Using Pictures in the English Classroom

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na využití obrázků ve výuce anglického jazyka. Jejím cílem je zjistit, zda jsou obrázky efektivním didaktickým prostředkem, který je relevantní pro každý typ i stádium výuky. Teoretická část nahlíží retrospektivním pohledem na zařazení obrázkových materiálů do výuky a zkoumá způsoby jejich využívání v době současné. Dále se zabývá typologií obrázkových materiálů a nabízí možnosti jejich využití v rámci výuky zaměřené na rozvoj řečových dovedností a jazykových prostředků. Významnou část práce tvoří také argumenty z oblasti psychologie, které využívání obrázků ve výuce podporují. Praktická část je tvořena případovou studií, jež zúročuje autorkou nabyté poznatky ze studia podkladových materiálů pro teoretickou část. Tato studie je postavena na kontrastu dvou vyučovacích hodin. Jejím účelem je potvrdit tezi, že výuka a výukový materiál využívající obrázky bude pro studentku Kateřinu přínosnější, než výuka anglického jazyka bez jejich použití. Výstupem této bakalářské práce je zhodnocení efektivity obrázkových materiálů na jednom konkrétním případu a zamyšlení se nad jejich širším uplatněním.

Abstract:

This Bachelor thesis focuses on using pictures in the English classroom. Its main aim is to find out whether pictures are an effective didactic tool relevant for every type and stage of a lesson. The theoretical part looks retrospectively at the introduction of visual materials into teaching and deals with ways of using them in present times. This part also focuses on typology of image materials and offers options for using them in lessons aimed at developement of language skills and systems. A significant part of this thesis also deals with psychological arguments which support using pictures in the classroom. The practical part consists of a case study in which the acquired knowledge of the author from material studies for the theoretical part are used. This study is based on a contrast of two lessons. It’s main aim is to confirm the thesis, that a lesson and materials using pictures will be more effective for a student, Katerina, than an English lesson without using them. In the conclusion of this Bachelor thesis there is an evaluation of the effectivenes of visual materials based on one concrete case and consideration of their further application.
