Morphometric analysis of active folds in the southern foothills of the Caucasus

Abstract:

Tektonická aktivita má klíčový vliv na formování reliéfu a údolních sítí v mladých orogenních oblastech jako je například vrásový pás řeky Kury v oblasti Ázerbájdžánu a Gruzie. Studované území je formováno vrásami a přesmyky mezi Velkým a Malým Kavkazem a je vrásněno od rozhraní Pliocénu a Pleistocénu v důsledku kolize Arabské a Euroasijské litosférické desky. Diplomová práce zpracovává SRTM DEM, konkrétně vylepšenou verzi s lepším rozlišením NASADEM, v softwaru GIS za účelem kvantifikovat relativní tektonickou aktivitu, porovnat ji s aktivními vrásami a vývojem od západu k východu dle Forteho a kol., (2010) a zaměřit se na faktory ovlivňující rozložení hodnot indexů. Relativní tektonická aktivita je počítána pomocí morfotektonických charaktreristik: Ksn indexu, hypsometrického integrálu, indexu směrodatné odchylky sklonu, hustoty odtokové sítě, frekvence odtokové sítě a poměru počtu toků I. řádu k celkovému počtu toků. Hodnoty indexů jsou přiřazovány 961 subpovodím IV. řádu. Zprůměrované indexy vytváří hlavní index relativní tektonické aktivity (IAT), který je členěn do čtyř kategorií: velmi vysoká (1 % subpovodí); vysoká (23 %); střední (54 %); nízká (22 %). Rozložení indexu relativní tektonické aktivity mezi západem a východem vychází procentuálně totožně, čímž nelze potvrdit vývoj vrásnění od západu na východ. S mapou relativní tektonické aktivity byly porovnány sesuvy, které vychází nadměrně pro nízkou kategorii. Významným faktorem je odolnost hornin, kdy u antiklinál podél řeky Alzani s odolnějšími horninami je vysoká relativní tektonická aktivita nadhodnocena. Oproti tomu drobné nekonsolidované antiklinály nedaleko Agsu vykazují nízkou relativní tektonickou aktivitu, kdy se náznaky v indexech ztrácí. Důkazem aktivity jsou zde projevy tektoniky jako nedávné zemětřesení či opuštěné údolí (Forte a kol., 2010; Pierce a kol., 2024). Antiklinála u hráze Mingačevirské přehrady obsahuje převážně střední a vysokou kategorii IAT a může do budoucna představovat přírodní ohrožení, ať už laterálním šířením vrásy či vznikem zemětřesení a sesuvů. Mimo Mingačevirské přehrady je detailněji poukázáno na aktivitu antiklinál u Shamkirské přehrady a východních antiklinál od města Goychay po Agsu. Taktéž je poukázáno na nepřímé důkazy o tektonické aktivitě, kdy některé indexy mohou značit spíše erodibilitu. Závěrem je v diplomové práci zmíněné omezené využití NASADEMu a byl navržený výzkum pro další studie v tomto tektonicky aktivním území vrásového pásu řeky Kury.

Abstract:

Tectonic activity plays a key role in shaping the relief and valley networks in young orogenic areas, such as the Kura fold-and-thrust belt in the region of Azerbaijan and Georgia. The studied area is formed by folds and thrusts between the Greater and Lesser Caucasus, having been folded since the Pliocene-Pleistocene boundary due to the collision of the Arabian and Eurasian lithospheric plates. This thesis processes SRTM DEM, specifically an enhanced version with better resolution called NASADEM, in GIS software to quantify relative tectonic activity, compare it with active folds and evolution from west to east according to Forte et al. (2010), and focus on factors influencing the distribution of index values. Relative tectonic activity is calculated using morphotectonic characteristics: Ksn index, hypsometric integral, standard deviation of slope, drainage density, drainage frequency, and the ratio of first-order streams to the total number of streams. Index values are assigned to 961 fourth order sub-basins. Averaged indices create the main index of relative tectonic activity (IAT), which is divided into four categories: very high (1 % of sub-basins); high (23 %); moderate (54 %); low (22 %). The distribution of the relative tectonic activity index between west and east is proportionally identical, thus not confirming the development of folding from west to east. Landslides, which are predominantly found in the low category, were compared with the map of relative tectonic activity. A significant factor is rock resistance, where in anticlines along the Alazani River with more resistant rocks, the high relative tectonic activity is overestimated. In contrast, small unconsolidated anticlines near Agsu show low relative tectonic activity, where indications in the indices are lost. Evidence includes indications of tectonics such as recent earthquakes or abandoned valley (Forte et al., 2010; Pierce et al., 2024). The anticline near the Mingachevir reservoir predominantly contains moderate and high IAT categories and may pose a natural hazard in the future, either through lateral fold propagation or the occurrence of earthquakes and landslides. Besides the Mingachevir reservoir, attention is also drawn to the activity of anticlines near the Shamkir reservoir or east anticlines from the city of Goychay to Agsu. Indirect evidence of tectonic activity is also highlighted, where indices may indicate erodibility instead. In conclusion, the thesis points out the limited use of NASADEM and proposes further research for studies in this tectonically active area of the Kura fold-and-thrust belt.
