Czech inter-war musical avantgarde, the term "avantgarde" in Czech music

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce nazvaná "Česká meziválečná hudební avantgarda, pojem 'avantgarda' v české hudbě", se zabývá českou meziválečnou hudební avantgardou a zkoumá obsah pojmu "avantgarda", který byl používán v českém hudebním prostředí meziválečného období. Má tři části. V první části je pozornost věnována jednak genezi pojmu "avantgarda", zejména jeho užívání v české hudební literatuře meziválečného období a pak také vztahu mezi "moderní" a "avantgardní" českou hudbou. Druhá část práce je věnována situaci v meziválečném Československu a s pomocí dobových tiskovin popisuje tehdejší reflexi světové "avantgardní", zejména tedy francouzské a německé hudby, a sleduje vlivy, kterými se čeští skladatelé nechali formovat.Takovým způsobem práce ukazuje vznikání a konstituci základních modelů avantgardního hudebního jednání a nabízí pak čtyři "obrazy české meziválečné hudební avantgardy". V poslední třetí části práce popisuje institucionální základnu české meziválečné hudební avantgardy a poskytuje přehled spolků a společností, ve kterých česká hudební avantgarda de facto vznikla a které společně s odbornými tiskovinami napomáhaly jejímu rozvoji. Součástí práce jsou notové ukázky ilustrující zmíněné čtyři "obrazy české meziválečné hudební avantgardy" a také výčet hlavních a tehdy aktivních skladatelů a jejich děl.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis called "Czech inter-war musical avantgarde, the term 'avantgarde'in Czech music" is concerned with the inter-war avantgarde music and the meaning of the term "avantgarde" as it was used in the Czech musical environment between the world wars. It consists of three parts. The first part pays attention firstly to the genesis of the term "avantgarde", particularly in its usage in the literature of Czech inter-war period, and also to the relation between "modern" and "avantgarde" music in Czechoslovakia in that time. The second part is concerned with the situation of the inter-war Czechoslovakia and describes the reflection of the international "avantgarde" (mostly French and German) music after the period printed media. Attention is paid to the influences which were at work in formating the Czech composers. The thesis thus shows germination and constitution of basic models of the avantgarde acting in music and offers four "forms of Czech inter-war musical avantgarde". In the third part, the author decribes institutional base of the Czech inter-war musical avantgarde and provides an overview of associations and societies, in which the Czech avantgarde was actually formed and which, together with professional printed media, helped its development. An integral part of the thesis are examples of notations illustrating the four "forms of Czech inter-war musical avantgarde", and includes also a survey of main active composers of that time and their compositions.
