False memories in the domain of politics

Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumá fenomén falešných vzpomínek v oblasti politiky, konkrétně v kontextu prezidentské volby z roku 2018. Cílem bylo prozkoumat faktory ovlivňující tendenci k jejich výskytu po falešných zprávách, které byly účastníkům výzkumu předem promítnuty. Pomocí online dotazníku byly získány data od 599 participantů starších 21 let. Participanti vzpomínali v průměru spíše na pravdivé než falešné události, ale i přes upozornění na možné nepravdivé informace, byla míra falešných vzpomínek nezanedbatelná. Dle politické náklonnosti k danému kandidátovi, byl předpovídán výskyt falešných vzpomínek na základě toho, zda byl kandidát konkrétním člověkem vnímán pozitivně či negativně. Tento předpoklad byl podle očekávání potvrzen. Ukázalo se, že individuální charakteristiky, vnímané znalosti a zájem o politiku, přímo nesouvisely s tendencí výskytu falešných vzpomínek s výjimkou zájmu o prezidentskou volbu, což bylo částečně v rozporu s předpokládanými výsledky.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the phenomenon of false memories in the area of politics, in the context of presidential election in 2018. Through an online questionnaire, data from 599 participants over the age of 21 were obtained. Participants remembered true rather than false events on average, but despite warnings of possible false information, the level of false memories was not negligible. According to the political affection for specific candidate, the presence of false memories was predicted on the basis of whether the candidate was perceived positively or negatively by a particular person. This hypothesis was confirmed as expected. It turned out that individual characteristics, perceived knowledge and interest in politics are not directly related to the tendency of false memories, despite of interest in the presidential election, which was partly at odds with the expected results.
