Abstract:

Tato práce zajímá se předmětem afrických amerických stereotypů v americké televizi. Je zaměřená především na současné dramatické pořady. Pojednává o mužských a ženských stereotypech v jejich časném i moderním projevů, historie afrických amerických stereotypů v americké televizi a odlišný přístup k téma stereotypů ve třech moderních pořadech - Arrow, Weeds a Black-ish. Dále papír dotýká problematiku vlivu televizního vysílaní na vnímání a sebevědomí mladých Afroameričanů. První část práce seznamuje čtenáře a nejvíce zažité stereotypy, jako je například Šťastný Sambo, the Coon, Tom, Black Buck, Mammy, Saphire, Jezabel, Magical Negro a Black Best Friend, the Thug / Black Brute, Black Athlete a Independent Black Woman a ukazuje jejich charakteristické rysy, které umožní jeich spatřeni v televizních inscenacích. Druhá kapitola uvádí základní informace o historii afrických amerických stereotypů v americké televizi, a kvůli tomu umožňuje čtenáři plně pochopit problémy v jejich moderním projevu, zatímco třetí je observací stereotypů ve třech moderních výrobách. V Arrow tvůrci přehlídky byly pravděpodobně sub-vědomě vytvářet znaky, které zobrazují funkce spojené s stereotypy, zatímco v Weeds tvůrci byli vědomi o nich a používají je k dosažení komického účinku. Zatímco série Black-ish dělá legraci ze stereotypů a ve stejnou dobu zvyšuji povědomí a poskytují zábavu. Konečně, poslední kapitola pojednává o otázku možného vlivu stereotypních reprezentací zobrazených v televizních inscenacích na mladých Afroameričanů.

Abstract:

This thesis covers the subject of African American stereotypes on American television, focusing mainly on the contemporary drama series. It discusses male and female stereotypes in their early and modern manifestations, the history of African American stereotypes on American television and different approach to the subject of stereotypes in three modern productions – Arrow, Weeds and Black-ish. Further, the paper touches the issue of the influence the TV-productions might have on the perception and self-perception of the young African Americans. The first part of the paper introduces the readers to the most common stereotypes such as the Happy Sambo, the Coon, the Tom, the Black Buck, Mammy, Saphire, Jezebel, Magical Negro and Black Best Friend, the Thug/Black Brute, Black Athlete and Independent Black Woman, showing their characteristic features that allow them to be spotted in the television productions. The second chapter introduces the basic information about the history of the African American stereotypes on the American television, giving the reads better background to fully comprehend the issues in their modern counterparts, while the third one is an observation of the stereotypes in three modern productions. In Arrow the creators of the show were probably sub-consciously creating the characters that displayed features associated with the stereotypes, while in Weeds the creators were conscious about them and used them to reach a comic effect. At the same time the series Black-ish is making fun of the stereotypes raising awareness and providing entertainment at the same time. Finally, the last chapter discusses the matter of possible influence of the stereotypical representations displayed in the tv-productions on the young African Americans.
