Abstract:

Práce se zabývá problematikou vzdělávání původních obyvatel Ameriky, severoamerických Indiánů. První kapitola popisuje jak vypadalo vzdělávání Indiánů v předkoloniálním období. Od druhé kapitoly se práce týká vzdělávání Indiánů prostřednictvím západní společnosti. Jedná se o část zabývající se koloniálním obdobím, úsilím civilizovat a kristianizovat původní kulturu Indiánů a popisuje první vzdělávací instituce pro Indiány. Třetí kapitola informuje o federálním období, federální politice a jejích dopadech na vzdělávání Indiánů. Blíže se také zabývá ústavními školami mimo indiánské rezervace. Čtvrtá kapitola seznamuje čtenáře s obdobím složitého procesu získávání práv Indiánů na sebeurčení. Zaměřuje se na nově zřizované komunitní školy, kmenově řízené univerzity a studijní programy. Pátá kapitola zahrnuje bližší pohled na Dartmouth College v USA a poskytuje informace o analýze výpovědí Indiánských studentů na univerzitě.

Abstract:

The present work deals with Native American education. The first chapter covers the pre-colonial education conducted by Native Americans. From the second chapter on the education is looked upon from the perspective of the white society. Thus the second chapter deals with the colonial period and provides information about the civilization and Christianization of Native Americans, next to information about first educational institutions. The third chapter demonstrates the background of the federal period educational efforts based on the federal government policies. The closer view is upon off-reservation boarding schools. The fourth chapter provides information about self-determination period and the significant changes in Native American education, specifically community schools, tribally controlled colleges and Native American Studies program. The fifth chapter includes case study conducted at the department of Native Studies at the Dartmouth College, New Hampshire.
