Interactive influence of water temperature and salinity on embryonic life-history in newts

Abstract:

Teoretická část práce se věnuje přehledu základních znaků embryonální životní historie obojživelníků, zejména velikosti a počtu vajíček, délce vývoje, míře přežívání, velikosti larválního stádia při vylíhnutí. Dále jsou zde uvedené dva faktory, které působí na tyto znaky – teplota a salinita vody. V této části je diskutován vliv teploty na velikost vajíček a larev, délku vývoje a přežívání embryí obojživelníků. Kromě vlivu teploty je zde uvedena souvislost mezi salinitou a znaky rané ontogeneze u obojživelníků, které nejvíce ovlivňuje (přežívání embryí, případně délka larev a tloušťka vaječných obalů). Praktická část pojednává o vlivu teploty vody a salinity na vybrané znaky životní historie (délku embryonálního vývoje, míru přežívání a délku larev při vylíhnutí) u dvou sympatrických evropských čolků, čolka obecného, Lissotriton vulgaris a čolka horského, Ichthyosaura alpestris. Výsledky ukazují, že teplota vody významně ovlivnila délku embryonálního vývoje a velikost larev čolků. Dále se ukázalo, že tyto dva znaky také souvisejí s rozdíly mezi těmito druhy a nahodilým rozdělením embryí do misek. Přežívání bylo ovlivněno pouze nahodilým umístěním do misek. Zajímavé bylo, že salinita vody neměla na žádný embryonální znak významný dopad ani u jednoho ze studovaných druhů.

Abstract:

Teoretical part of the thesis deals with an overview of the basic embryonic life history traits of amphibians, especially size and number of eggs, length of development, survival rate, size of larval stage at hatching. Then there are two factors that affect these traits – temperature and salinity of water. This section discusses the effect of temperature on size of the egg and larvae, length of development and survival of amphibian embryos. In addition to the temperature, there is a link between salinity and signs of early ontogenesis in amphibians, which it affects the most (survival of embryos, eventually larval length and egg capsule thickness). The practical part deals with the influence of water temperature and salinity on selected traits of life history (length of embryonic development, survival rate and larval length at hatching) in two sympatric European newts, smooth newt, Lissotriton vulgaris and alpine newt, Ichthyosaura alpestris. Results show, that temperature of water significantly affects the length of embryonic development and size of newt larvae. Furthemore, it has been shown that these two traits are related to differences between these two species and the random distribution of embryos into dishes. Survival was only affected by random placement in dishes. Interestingly, the salinity of water did not have a significant effect on any embryonic traits in either of the studied species.
