Ritual Impurity and the Caste System: Problems of the Dominant Analyses of Japanese Traditions.

Abstract:

Tématem této práce je rituální nečistota v Japonsku (kegare). Cílem práce je poukázat na současný akademický diskurz o diskriminaci na základě kegare, který se mimo jiné zabývá postavením lidí a kami v posvátné a profánní sféře. Kdy kami jako rituálně čistá božstva by měla být součástí posvátné sféry, a lidé, kteří se mohou znečistit, sféry profánní. Do tohoto postavení vstupují japonské koncepty hare, ke a kegare. Hare je přirovnáváno posvátné sféře a čistotě a ke profánní sféře. Kegare by mělo pak být jakou si osou prolínající obě sféry. Otázka, kterou si ve své práci kladu, zní: co je kegare? Na základě evidence z japonské kroniky Kodžiki se domnívám, že Eliadeho distinkci posvátného a profánního nelze aplikovat na japonské koncepty hare ke a kegare. Ani nelze řadit kami do posvátné sféry. Dle mého současného výzkumu se jedná o kulturní dichotomii stěží aplikovatelnou na japonskou kulturu a náboženství. A přesto, že japonští badatelé se shodují s autoritami v západní vědě v tom, co kegare je a jakou roli v japonském náboženství hraje, může mít kegare jiný, původní význam v japonském světě, než je rituální nečistota.

Abstract:

The theme of this thesis is ritual impurity in Japan (kegare). The aim of this work is to point out the current academic discourse about discrimination based on kegare, which among other things deals with the position of people and kami in the sacred and profane sphere. When kami as ritually pure deities should be part of the sacred realm and people who can become polluted, should be part of the profane sphere. Japanese concepts hare, ke and kegare are entering this position. Hare is linked to the sacred sphere and purity, ke is linked to profane sphere. Kegare should be then the axis of this two spheres. The question I ask in my work is: what is kegare? Based on evidence from the Japanese chronicle Kojiki, I assume that Eliade's distinction between sacred and profane cannot be applied to Japanese concepts of hare, ke and kegare. Nor can we assign kami into the sacred realm. In my current research, it is a cultural dichotomy hardly applicable to Japanese culture and religion. And although Japanese scholars agree with authorities in Western science about what kegare is and what role it plays in Japanese religion, kegare may have a different, original meaning in the Japanese world than ritual impurity.
