Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá analýzou románu Nádraží Perdido od britského autora Chiny Miévilla z pohledu využití městského prostředí. Práce využívá především marxistická teorie a myšlenkových proudů z ní vycházejících. V úvodní části práce je představeno hnutí New Weird, které je specifickým směrem spojujícím nejen různé podžánry fantastiky, ale i přesahujícím rámec žánru. Román Nádraží Perdido je považován za základní kámen tohoto hnutí. V další části je Miévillův román zasazen do kontextu literatury zabývající se městským prostředím, následující kapitoly se potom věnují samotné analýze díla. Jak již bylo zmíněno, k tomuto účelu je využita především marxistická teorie a tzv. “spatial theory”, která z marxismu vychází. Tato analýza dokazuje relevantnost Miévillova díla zasazeného do fiktivního univerza v reálném světě, především díky faktu, že (anti)hrdinové románu jsou i přes nejrůznější rasové předsudky, názorové i jiné odlišnosti a další problémy schopni v krizové situaci spojit své síly a spolupracovat v boji proti společnému nebezpečí. Jak ukazuje závěr knihy, taková spolupráce může sice odvrátit bezprostředně hrozící nebezpečí, ale na řešení dlouhodobých problémů hluboce zakořeněných v systému je potřeba úsilí širokých vrstev obyvatel různých ras, společenských tříd a politického převědčení. Ačkoliv se Nádraží Perdido nezabývá přímo situací, kdy ke změně systému dojde, ukazuje možnou cestu k této změně. Městské prostředí je přitom pro takovou změnu rozhodující, protože je jednak mocenským centrem a základním kamenem kapitalistického systému, jednak místem, kde dochází ke kontaktu nejrůznějších skupin obyvatel.

Abstract:

This Thesis deals with the representation of city spaces in China Miéville’s novel The Perdido Street Station. This analysis is based primarily on Marxist criticism and theories which build upon the Marxist school of thoughts. At the beginning of the Thesis, the movement called New Weird, a specific subgenre of th fantastic literature which nevertheless transcends its boundaries, is introduced; Miéville’s novel is considered the cornerstone of this movement. The novel is further set in context of the discourse of the fantastic as well as the mainstream literature dealing with the city space; the following chapters deal with the anaylsis of the book itself. The works of Marxist theoreticians as well as critics of the novel are used for this purpose; the most important theoretical concept being the Spatial Theory which deals with space and its role in the society. The purpose of this analysis is to prove that the importance of Miéville’s work is not limited to the genre of fantastic literature, since his novel can be relevant for the word of everyday experience as well. The main reason for its relevance is the behaviour of the protagonists of the novel who are able to overcome their differences and prejudices in order to fight against a danger that threatens everybody. The ending of the book, however, shows that the cooperation of individuals can avert an immediate threat but not the problems rooted deeply in the society, nor can such force be sufficient to overthrow an authoritative government and, in general, to give control of the space in which they are living back to the inhabitants. For this purpose, a long-term cooperation of all groups in the society is necessary. The city space plays an important role in this struggle, since it is not only the centre of the capitalist system but also a place where many different groups of inhabitants meet and live together.
