Land Grabbing - a Tool of State-Building?

Abstract:

Food crisis from years 2007-2008 has caused a shift in the key concepts of food security of many countries, and has provoked an unprecedented interest in agricultural investment, unknown during the last decades. In consequence, the states eager to secure stable food supplies and also different investors’ subjects started to focus their attention towards countries having large tracts of potentially unused land – that is, primary developing countries. This bachelor thesis aims to examine the background of these investment contracts, particularly from the perspective of target countries where investors direct their capital flows and where land acquisitions take place. The central question of this thesis will be to find out, using theory of historical sociology, whether large-scale agricultural investment has an impact on state-building of host countries and if this assumption proves valid, then in which aspects it is possible to observe the process of state formation.

Abstract:

Potravinová kríza z rokov 2007-2008 spôsobila okrem iného zmenu v nahliadaní mnohých štátov na otázky potravinovej bezpečnosti a vyvolala za posledné roky nevídaný záujem o investovanie do pôdy. Dôsledkom toho sa pozornosť štátov usilujúcich o zabezpečenie stabilných zásob potravín a taktiež rôznych investorských subjektov obrátila smerom ku krajinám disponujúcim potenciálne voľnou pôdou, teda predovšetkým krajinám rozvojového sveta. Táto práca si kladie za cieľ preskúmať pozadie týchto investičných kontraktov, a to predovšetkým z pohľadu cieľových krajín, do ktorých investori smerujú kapitálové toky a v ktorých tieto zábery pôdy prebiehajú. Ústrednou otázkou práce bude pritom zistiť, za pomoci historickej sociológie, či má v prípade hostiteľských krajín trend rozsiahleho agroinvestovania dopad na budovanie štátu a ak áno, v akých aspektoch je možné formovanie štátu pozorovať.
