Ritual Intuitions of Czech Pagans

Abstract:

Hlavní východiska bakalářské diplomové práce Rituální intuice českých pohanů se nachází v teorii rituální kompetence a v její kritické reflexi. V práci byla testována predikce teorie rituální kompetence, která předpokládá, že v rituálu speciálního činitele bude jako nejdůležitější součást rituálu vyhodnocen právě činitel. Dále byla v rámci této práce testována predikce o důležitosti specifik v rituálu, která předpokládá, že informace o posloupnosti procedurálních kroků a časové specifikaci mají vliv na vyhodnocení účinnosti rituálu. Obě reflexe, na které cílí predikce, mají své kořeny v rituálních intuicích, které jsou sdílené napříč všemi lidmi bez ohledu na jejich kulturní zázemí. Predikce byly testovány pomocí reflexe samhainového rituálu svými účastníky. Tito účastníci byli profilováni jako členové nebo sympatizanti s Českou pohanskou společností, kteří používají stejný referenční rámec při svém vymezení – pohanství, ale zároveň naplňují svá schémata o minimálně-kontraintuitivních činitelích rozdílnými obsahy. Výsledky z testování predikce teorie rituální kompetence přinesly shodu napříč odpověďmi účastníků, která byla v souladu s predikcí. Odpovědi účastníků vyzdvihovaly důležitost hlavní kněžky oproti důležitosti nádoby pro změnu účinku rituálu. Hlavní kněžka byla pro účastníky důležitou především pro své zkušenosti a pro své charisma. Výsledky z testování predikcí o důležitosti specifik byly ovlivněny nedobrou formulací otázek. I přesto ale odpovědi na otázky přinesly zajímavé výsledky, které v konečném důsledku podpořily výchozí predikci. Za hlavní přínos práce je možné považovat to, že výzkum cílený na rituální intuice účastníků rituálu se jejich rituálních intuicí dotkl a přinesl tak chybějící článek ve výzkumu rituálních intuicí v rámci kognitivní vědy.

Abstract:

Theoretical background of this thesis lies in the theory of ritual competence and the critical reflection of this theory. Main aim of this thesis was to test the prediction of ritual competence theory concerning importance of the agent in the special agent ritual. The second tested prediction was the one concentrated on the importance of procedural steps and the time specificity – the problem reflected by the critical followers of the ritual competence theory. These predictions were put into the test by participants of Samhain ritual, who claim themselves as Pagans, but theirs schemes about minimal-counterintuitive agents are filled by different content. The results from testing the prediction of the ritual competence theory met the predictions expectations. Participants of the ritual reflected as most important part of the special agent ritual, the agent in this ritual, the main priestess. In the participant's reflection, qualities of the priestess such, as her experience with rituals and pure intentions, were crucial for their evaluation of her importance. Testing the second prediction was followed by imperfections in design of questions, but still results supported the prediction and showed that information about the detail procedural steps and the time specificity plays an important role in the evaluation of ritual efficacy.
