Anatomical response of trees to stem burial by contaminated material

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je změřit a porovnat anatomické a chemické změny v impaktovaných stromech Picea abies (L.) Karst. blokovobahenními proudy nesoucí kontaminovaný materiál, s referenčními nezasaženými kusy. Sledovaná oblast se nachází v Rumunsku, ve východních Karpatech, přesněji v pohoří Călimani. V této oblasti docházelo v minulém století k velmi agresivní a nešetrné těžbě síry. Po ukončení těžební činnosti došlo pouze k jednorázovým rehabilitačním opatřením, nikoliv však k zajištění haldy kontaminovaného materiálu. Tato práce zjišťuje, jak působí zasypání kontaminovaným materiálem na anatomii buněk stromů a jak stromy reagují na chemické změny v souvislosti s obsahem stabilních izotopů uhlíku a obsahem síry v porovnání se stromy referenčními. K této studii bylo zapotřebí odebrat vzorky zasažených a referenční stromů a podrobit je anatomickým a dendrochemickým analýzám. Konkrétně se jednalo o analýzu anatomické odezvy buněk a analýzu zjišťování stabilních izotopů uhlíku a obsahu síry. Výsledky anatomické i dendrochemické analýzy jsou v této práci interpretovány a dokládají anatomické a chemické změny u disturbovaných stromů, které vedou k jejich postupnému úhynu. Výsledky anatomické buněčné analýzy reflektují anatomickou změnu ve velikosti a tvaru buněk po roce 2016. Data získaná z dendrochemické analýzy stabilních izotopů nepotvrzují původní předpoklad korelace mezi pohřbením kontaminovaným materiálem a změnou v diskriminaci uhlíku. Měření obsahu síry však reflektuje hodnoty, které korelují se souvislostí odumírání stromů po impaktu z roku 2016. Nárůst obsahu tohoto kontaminantu je jedním z faktorů odumírání zasažených stromů. Práce potvrzuje původní předpoklad, tedy reakce na zasypání kontaminovaným materiálem, a to převážně anatomickou odezvou a reakcí na obsah síry.

Abstract:

The aim of this work is to measure and compare anatomical and chemical changes by contamindate debris flows, in impacted Picea abies (L.) Karst. trees with reference unaffected pieces. The monitored area is located in Romania, in the Eastern Carpathians, more precisely in the Călimani Mountains. In the last century, there was a very aggressive and careless mining of sulfur in this area, after the end of mining activities, only one-off rehabilitation measures were taken, but the heap of contaminated material was not secured. This work investigates how backfilling with contaminated material affects the anatomy of tree cells and how trees respond to chemical changes in relation to stable carbon isotopes and sulfur content, compared to reference trees. For this study, it was necessary to take samples of the affected and reference trees and subject them to anatomical and dendrochemical analyzes, namely the analysis of the anatomical response of the cells and the analysis of the determination of stable carbon isotopes and sulfur content. The results of anatomical and dendrochemical analysis are interpreted in this work and document the anatomical and chemical changes in disturbed trees that lead to their gradual death. The results of anatomical cell analysis reflect the anatomical change in cell size and shape after 2016. Data obtained from dendrochemical analysis of stable isotopes do not confirm the original assumption of a correlation between burial of contaminated material and change in carbon discrimination. However, the measurement of the sulfur content reflects values that correlate with the relationship between tree death after the 2016 impact; an increase in the content of this contaminant is one of the factors in the death of affected trees. The work confirms the original assumption, the reaction to backfilling with contaminated material, mainly by anatomical response and reaction to sulfur content.
