Alpha Females: Doing or Undoing Gender?

Abstract:

V současné době se mnohem výrazněji než kdy jindy můžeme setkávat s novým nastupujícím fenoménem silných, sebevědomých žen, které jdou v životě za svými cíli. Mají dobré vzdělání, věří ve svůj vlastní úspěch, uplatňují se na trhu práce ve vysokých manažerských pozicích. Nespoléhají se na manželství jako instituci, která je má materiálně zabezpečit. Jejich schopnost kumulovat moc a umět ji vhodně použít ve své profesi je posouvá na společenském žebříčku na roveň mužů. Obdobně jako pro muže vůdce (alfa-muže) se pro tyto ženy začíná v sociologii vžívat označení alfa-ženy (Ward, Popson, DiPaolo 2010). Tato práce se soustředí právě na téma alfa-žen a toho, jakým způsobem vyjednávají svoji pozici ve společnosti. S ohledem na probíhající diskusi v rámci genderových studií je téma mapováno především z pohledu teorií doing (West, Zimmerman 2002, 2008) a undoing gender (Risman 2009, Deutsch 2007). Alfa-ženy svým chováním a charakteristikami vybočují z tradičního stereotypního vnímání žen jako pasivních bytostí, jež by měly svůj život zasvětit rodině. Na interakční úrovni, jež je základem (re)produkce genderu, nedělají svůj gender normativně, čímž podporují možnost měnit genderový řád. Jak dělají alfa-ženy svůj gender či zda ho vůbec dělají nebo spíše oddělávají, to jsou základní otázky textu. S příklonem ke koncepci undoing gender práce hledá právě ty momenty, ve kterých tyto ženy gender oddělávají. Metodou pro stanovený cíl jsou kvalitativní hloubkové rozhovory, jež poskytnou komplexní vhled do problematiky a stanou se prostředkem k zodpovězení výzkumných otázek.

Abstract:

Nowadays, more strongly than ever we can meet with the new emerging phenomenon of strong, confident women who go in life for their goals. They have a good education, believe in their own success, they apply to the labor market in high managerial positions. They do not rely on marriage as an institution which has a materially secure. Their ability to accumulate power and know how to use it appropriately in their profession are reasons for moving up the social ladder on a par with men. Sociology begins to label these women as the alpha-females like the male leader – alpha-men (Ward, Popson, DiPaolo 2010).This thesis is focused on alpha-females and the problem how to negotiate their position in society. With regard to the ongoing debate within gender studies is this topic mapped primarily from the perspective of theories doing (West, Zimmerman 2002, 2008) and undoing gender (Risman 2009 Deutsch 2007). Alfa-female's behavior and characteristics are outside the traditional stereotypical perception of women as passive beings who should dedicate his life to the family. In the interaction level, which is the basis of (re) production of gender, they do not make their gender normative, alpha-females support the ability to change the gender order. How do alpha-females their gender or whether they do or rather undo it are the basic questions of the text. With an inclination towards concept of undoing gender work is looking for those moments in which these women undo gender. Method for determining the goal is qualitative interview, which provide a comprehensive insight into the problems and become a means to answer the research questions.
