Aesthetic Aspects of Bioart

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis contains discussion about aesthetic aspects of biological art known as bio-art. First section of this thesis is dedicated to elementary definitions of aesthetic functions of art and in next sections with usage of these definitions we are attempting to define the aesthetics of biological art which represents, in W. J. T. Mitchell’s thoughts, new mode of conceptual art and in the most cases this art is invisible for casual viewers whereas its processes are present under the microscope on the subcelular level. Because of that it is problematical but all the more acute to find aesthetic aspects of this art. In the end, the level of aesthetics is clarified based on the analysis of some selected works of biological art. We want to determine hereby the truth of allegation that biotechnological art is not primarily based on aesthetics in traditional way, but it is based on examining the logic of life (Hauser).

Abstract:

Táto bakalárska diplomová práca pojednáva o estetických aspektoch biologického umenia známeho ako bioart. Prvá časť práce je venovaná základným definíciám estetických funkcií umenia, cez ktoré sa v ďalších častiach preklenie až k pokusu o definovanie estetiky biologického umenia, ktoré predstavuje podľa W. J. T. Mitchella nový mód konceptuálneho umenia a vo väčšine prípadov je toto umenie bežnému oku diváka neviditeľné, keďže sa jeho procesy odohrávajú pod mikroskopom, na subcelulárnej úrovni. Preto je problematické no o to akútnejšie hľadať estetické aspekty tohto umenia. Na základe analýzy niektorých vybraných diel biologického umenia sa v závere objasní miera estetiky, ktorú v sebe obsahujú. Týmto chceme zároveň preveriť pravdivosť tvrdenia, že biotechnologické umenie nie je primárne založené na estetike v tradičnom zmysle, ale na skúmaní logiky života(Hauser).
