Variability of Romany Discourse: Three Media Self Representations of One Ethnic Identity

Abstract:

Předkládaná diplomová práce se zabývá mediálním (sebe)obrazem romství v komunitních periodikách Romano hangos, Gitanos a Travellers’ Times. Komunitní tiskoviny byly vybrány záměrně tak, aby zastupovaly odlišné etnicko-kulturní oblasti. Cílem práce je analyzovat editoriální postupy užité zkoumanými periodiky při konstrukci mediálního (sebe)obrazu romství a výslednou sebepercepci romství s důrazem na diskurz integrace. Teoretická část představuje komunitní média jako třetí sektor médií a dále pracuje s koncepty integrace, mediální konstrukce reality a diskurz. Analytická část kombinuje výsledky obsahové analýzy s kvalitativní diskurzivní analýzou, která byla využita s cílem odhalit význam odlišných mocenských praktik a strategií skrze něž je ve zkoumaných tiskovinách komunikováno sebepojetí romství.

Abstract:

The submitted diploma thesis deals with media self representation of Roma people in community printed media Romano hangos, Gitanos and Travellers’ Times. Community periodicals have been chosen on purpose to represent different ethnic and cultural areas. The aim of the thesis is to analyse editorial techniques of chosen periodicals which were used to construct media self image of Roma people and to analyse overall self perception of Roma people with emphasis on integration discourse. Theoretical part introduces community media sector and works with concept of integration, discourse and media representation of reality. Analytical part combines the results of content analysis with qualitative discourse analysis which was used to uncover meanings of different power techniques and strategies used to communicate self perception of Roma ethnicity in analysed media
