Comparison of payment card usage in the Czech Republic and selected EU countries

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce je zaměřena na srovnání využití debetních a kreditních platebních karet v ČR, Rakousku a Německu. Teoretická část obsahuje obecnou charakteristiku pojmu platebního styku. Poté je rozebrána charakteristika bezhotovostního platebního styku a následně samotné platební karty. Dále je rozebrán historický vývoj platebních karet. Druhá kapitola se zabývá členěním platebních karet, zahrnuje i detailnější popsání debetních a kreditních typů karet. V této části je také řešena bezkontaktní platební karta. Poté se zabývá problematikou ochranných prvků platební karty a bezpečností při jejím použití. Ve třetí kapitole jsou srovnány platební zvyklosti vybraných států včetně ČR a stručný popis vývoje měny vybraných států. Praktická část se v následujícím textu zaměřuje na statistické a grafické porovnání využití platebních karet ve vybraných státech EU včetně ČR, a to za období od roku 2016 do konce roku 2020. Veškeré číselné hodnoty uvedené v práci jsou pro možnost srovnání převedeny na společný ekvivalent měnu EUR. V práci je využita metoda analýzy časových řad.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis focuses on a comparison of the use of debit and credit cards in the Czech Republic, Austria and Germany. The theoretical part contains a general characterization of the concept of payment transactions. Then the characteristics of non-cash payment transactions and then the payment cards themselves are discussed. The historical development of payment cards is then discussed. The second chapter deals with the breakdown of payment cards and includes a more detailed description of debit and credit card types. Contactless payment cards are also discussed in this section. It then addresses the issue of payment card security features and safety in its use. The third chapter compares the payment practices of selected countries, including the Czech Republic, and provides a brief description of the development of the currencies of selected countries. The practical part in the following text focuses on the statistical and graphical comparison of the use of payment cards in selected EU countries, including the Czech Republic, for the period from 2016 to the end of 2020. All numerical values presented in the thesis are converted to the common equivalent of the EUR currency for the purpose of comparison. The time series analysis method is used in the thesis.
