Self-stigma and stigmatization in high schools from the perspective of people with mental illness

Abstract:

Cílem práce bylo popsat, jakou zkušenost mají mladí dospělí s duševním onemocněním v době studia na střední škole, zda se potýkali se stigmatizací a do jaké míry jejich život ovlivnila sebestigmatizace. Zvolena byla kvalitativní metoda výzkumu, polostrukturované rozhovory a analýza dat pomocí kódování. V práci je popsána zkušenost s hospitalizací, s rolí nemocného, proměna vztahů s vrstevníky i vliv médií v pohledu na duševní nemoci. Bylo zjištěno, že participantky musely čelit mnoha překážkám. Se stigmatizací se setkaly nejen mezi vrstevníky, ale některé i v rodině. Došlo také ke změně chápání vlastní identity. Sebestigmatizace nekončí po návratu z hospitalizace, ale vliv na sebedůvěru a sociální vazby má i do budoucna. Participantky zmiňovaly, že na duševní nemoci by se mělo pohlížet tak, jak je pohlíženo na fyzické nemoci. Některé pociťují, že vlivem osvěty došlo k pomalému snižování negativního pohledu veřejnosti na duševní nemoci.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis aimed to describe the experiences of young adults with mental illness during their high school studies, whether they faced stigmatization, and to what extent their lives were affected by self-stigmatization. The chosen research method was a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews and data analysis using coding methodology. The study describes the experience of hospitalization, the sick role, changes in relationships with peers, and the impact of media on the perception of mental illness. It was found that participants faced many obstacles. Some of the participants experienced stigmatization not only from peers but also from family members. Additionally, there was a change in their understanding of identity. Self-stigmatization did not end after returning from hospitalization but also impacted self-confidence and social relationships in the future. Participants mentioned that mental illness should be viewed as physical illness. Some felt that public education has slowly decreased negative attitudes toward mental illness.
