Light as a key environmental factor for the occurrence of the Scarce Fritillary Euphydryas maturna

Abstract:

Hnědásek osikový (Euphydryas maturna) je heliofilní druh motýla, přesto nebyl doposud studován vliv slunečního světla na umístění hnízd housenek. Proto jsem se v této práci na vliv světla zaměřila. Měření probíhalo na nedávno objevené introdukované populaci hnědáska na lokalitě u Dobré u Frýdku-Místku. U hnízd jsem kromě světelných podmínek zaměřila i na ostatní podmínky prostředí. Ke každému hnízdu jsem hledala referenční strom, který byl většinou bez přítomnosti hnízd hnědáska. Na lokalitě jsem našla celkem 62 hnízd na větvích jasanu ztepilého (Fraxinus excelsior). Výsledky ukázaly, že světlo nemělo na přítomnost hnízd vliv. Prokázal se, ale vztah mezi výskytem hnízd a výškou stromu, kdy se nejvíce hnízd nacházelo ve výšce 300-1000 cm, ukázalo se, že obsazené stromy byly průměrně vyšší než stromy neobsazené. Další zjištění bylo, že se housenky vyššího instaru vyskytovaly na stromech, které měly větší zapojení podrostu. Tato skutečnost by mohla souviset s výškou stromu. Takže, vyšší stromy propustí do bylinného patra méně světla než stromy nižší. Pro stáří housenek jsem dále zjistila, že čím vyššího instaru housenka byla, tím širší byl kmen hostitelského stromu. Tento jev by mohl mít, stejně jako předchozí, souvislost s výškou stromu. Lze se domnívat, že na vyšší strom dopadá i více světla a je zde tím pádem i tepleji, což je pro správný vývoj housenek důležité. Posledním zjištěním byla silnější orientace hnízd na jižní stranu. Tato preference by mohla být z důvodu většího množství tepla a světla, které jsou pro housenky důležité. Na základě mých zjištění, jsem navrhla opatření pro zlepšení životních podmínek hnědáska na studované lokalitě.

Abstract:

Euphydryas maturna is a heliophilic species of butterfly, yet the influence of sunlight on the location of caterpillar nests has not been studied so far. That's why I focused on the effect of light in this work. The measurements were carried out on the recently discovered introduced population of Euphydryas maturna at the location near Dobrá near Frýdek-Místek. In addition to lighting conditions, I also focused on other environmental conditions for the nests. For each nest, I looked for a reference tree, which was mostly without the presence of nests. At the site, I found a total of 62 nests on the branches of Fraxinus excelsior. The results showed that light had no effect on the presence of nests. However, a relationship between nest occurrence and tree height was demonstrated, with most nests occurring at 300-1000 cm, and occupied trees were on average taller than unoccupied trees. Another finding was that higher instar caterpillars occurred on trees that had more understory involvement. This fact could be related to the height of the tree. So, taller trees let less light into the herb layer than shorter trees. For the age of the caterpillars, I further found that the higher instar the caterpillar was, the wider the trunk of the host tree. This phenomenon could, like the previous one, be related to the height of the tree. It can be assumed that more light falls on a taller tree and it is therefore warmer, which is important for the proper development of caterpillars. The last finding was a stronger orientation of the nests to the south side. This preference could be due to more heat and light, which are important for caterpillars. Based on my findings, I proposed measures to improve the living conditions of the Euphydryas maturna at the studied locality.
