Terror management theory: relationship between mortality salience and cultural hostility

Abstract:

Studie má za cíl propojit obranné mechanismy strachu ze smrti s faktorem nenávistnosti vůči ostatním kulturám. Vztah strachu ze smrti a zvýšení lidských obran (v našem případě identifikace s vlastní kulturou) je již prokázáno, stejně tak jako vztah vysoké identifikace s naší kulturou a vyšší hostilita vůči ostatním kulturám. V naší studii tedy zkoumáme vztah strachu ze smrti (pomocí metody zvýšení vědomí smrtelnosti u experimentální skupiny) a naměřenou hostilitu vůči třem různým kulturám (romská, vietnamská, muslimská). Byly použity dva nástroje k měření nenávistnosti, pocitový teploměr (hypotéza 1) a Bogardusova škála sociální distance (hypotéza 2). U všech odpovědí lze sledovat trend vyšší míry hostility u experimentální skupiny, jak bylo předpokládáno, ovšem výsledky jsou statisticky významné pouze u pocitového teploměru a romské skupiny. Podle předešlých studií pociťují ženy silnější strach ze smrti než muži, proto by měli vykazovat silnější hostilitu v našem experimentu. Výsledky VO3 tento trend naznačovaly, nejsou ovšem statisticky významné. Předpoklady o věkových skupinách ve vztahu k hostilitě se nepotvrdily.

Abstract:

Goal of this study is to find a link between defense mechanisms of fear of death and hostility towards other cultures. The connection between fear of death and augmentation of defense mechanisms (in our case cultural worldview) is already proven by many studies, as same as the relation of high identification with our culture and higher hostility towards other cultures. In our study, we examine the relation between fear of death (using a method for mortality salience increase through experimental group) and reported hostility towards three specific cultures (Romany, Vietnamese and Muslims). Two scales were used for hostility measurement, feeling thermometer (hypothesis 1) and Bogardus scale of social distance (hypothesis 2). In all the answers, we can see a specific trend of higher hostility reported in the experimental group, as suggested. However, the results are statistically significant only in the case of feeling thermometer and Romany group. According to previous studies, women feel a higher fear of death then men so they should report higher hostility in our experiment. Results of VO3 suggest this trend as well, although the results are not statistically significant either. The premises about age groups and hostility were not proven.
