Echoes of the Ladakhi past captured in pictures: the Mapping of the Iconographic Testimonies in Diskit monastery

Abstract:

Tuto práci tvoří úvodní studie, jež je součástí rozsáhlejšího výzkumu vizuální kultury v ladackém buddhistickém klášteře Diskit. V důsledku toho práce zahrnuje vhled do kontextuálních souvislostí zkoumaného prostředí s pozorností kladenou zejména na geografická, historická, kulturologická a buddhologická fakta, dále předkládá stručný přehled vývoje přístupu k vizuální kultuře a vlastní teoretická východiska, která následně aplikuje na výzkumný materiál v podobě nástěnných maleb a trojrozměrné ikonografie ve svatyni Lhačung. Praktická část práce sestává ze dvou činností. Nejdříve je zkoumaná ikonografie podrobena identifikaci, na níž navazuje komparace vybraných motivů s ikonografií z tibetského kláštera Tašilhünpo. Jejím účelem je zjistit, zda nebo nakolik se diskitská ikonografie odklání od doktrinálních stanov ikonografie a ikonometrie tradovaných v tibetském buddhismu a zejména v řádu Gelug. Celkově si práce klade za cíl zpracovat data nashromážděná během první fáze terénního výzkumu, k nimž v dohledné době přibudou data další, tentokrát postihující interpretativní fázi výzkumu.

Abstract:

This thesis is an introductory study which is part of broader research. The central interest of research represents a visual culture of buddhist Diskit Monastery in Ladakh. As result, the work includes introduction into the context of geography, history, culturology and buddhology present in examined local enviroment, then provides a historical overview of approaches to visual culture and own theoretical bases that are subsequently applied onto the research material. This material counts a murals and three-dimensional iconography in the old temple Lhachung. The practical part of thesis consists of two types of working. First subject matter is an identification of local iconography on which builds a second subject matter - the comparison of selected motifs with iconography from Tibetan Tashilhunpo Monastery. Their purpose is to find out whether or how much is iconography in Diskit diverging from traditional doctrinal articles of iconography and iconometry basically shared by all schools of tibetan buddhism and especially by the Gelugpa. In general the work aims to process the data collected during the first phase of field research, which will be enlarged in the foreseeable future by a further more data. These data will be investigated in planned interpretive stage of research.
