Defence strategies of common cuckoo Cuculus canorus hosts against brood parasitism

Abstract:

Avian brood parasites impose considerable fitness costs on their hosts. Hosts, however, are not defenceless and may protect their nests from parasitism. The front line of defence is aggression against brood parasites, which is far more effective if parents are able to differentiate among threats. We demonstrated that hosts adjust not only their aggressive behaviour, but also the subsequent nest attendance according to the type of enemy that appeared at the nest. Moreover, during repeated parasite intrusions, nest owners increased their mobbing intensity. Generally, host females are predicted to have more important roles in antiparasitic behaviour, because they typically are primarily responsible for clutch incubation. However, we found that both pair members either cooperate in aggressive behaviour and egg rejection or each of them holds a specific role: the male in mobbing and nest guarding, and the female in egg rejection. Time the hosts need to reject a foreign egg was strongly associated with the time needed to its recognition. Therefore clutch inspection (during which egg recognition most probably takes place) and previous individual experience with parasitism are the crucial factors affecting host response times towards foreign eggs. Finally, hosts may discriminate also against parasitic young, because this is the last chance to reduce the cost of parasitism. However, we did not find that hosts recognize the nestlings they are caring for: while defending the nest against predators, they risk themselves equally for their own and parasitic young.

Abstract:

Hniezdny parazitizmus výrazne ovplyvňuje reprodukčnú úspešnosť hostiteľov. Tí však nie sú bezbranní a parazitácii dokážu predísť už samotnou agresívnou obranou hniezda, ktorá je efektívnejšia, ak sú vtáci schopní rozlíšiť rôzne typy nebezpečenstva. Preukázali sme, že hostitelia nielenže modifikovali agresívne správanie, ale aj následnú inkubáciu podľa typu nepriateľa, ktorý sa objavil pri hniezde. Počas opakovaných návštev parazita navyše svoju agresivitu zintenzívnili. Vo všeobecnosti sa predpokladá, že hostiteľské samice majú dôležitejšiu úlohu pri antiparazitickej obrane, pretože sú primárne zodpovedné za inkubáciu znášky. My sme ale zistili, že na agresívnom správaní i odstraňovaní vajec sa podieľali buď obaja partneri spoločne alebo každý z nich zohrával pri obrane hniezda špecifickú úlohu: samci pri stretoch s parazitom a pri strážení hniezda, samice pri odmietaní parazitických vajec. Čas potrebný k tomu, aby hostitelia cudzie vajce odstránili, bol úzko spätý s časom potrebným k jeho rozpoznaniu. Kontrolovanie obsahu hniezda (počas ktorého pravdepodobne dochádza k rozpoznávaniu vajec) a osobná skúsenosť každého z partnerov sa ukázali ako kľúčové faktory ovplyvňujúce načasovanie hostiteľskej reakcie voči cudziemu vajcu. V neposlednom rade hostitelia môžu tiež rozpoznávať parazitické mláďatá, pretože ich odmietnutie je poslednou možnosťou ako zmierniť negatívny vplyv parazitizmu. Nami testovaní hostitelia však nerozpoznávali o aké mláďatá sa starajú a pri obrane hniezda voči predátorom riskovali rovnako pre svoje vlastné ako aj pre parazitické mláďatá.
