The Enlightenment Project and Emancipation of Man: Liberty in the Modern State

Abstract:

Předložená práce pojednává o osvícenském projektu tak, jak byl diskutován v 18. a 20. století. Nejprve uvádí krátkou diskuzi o tom, jak je projekt osvícenství chápán v kontextu současné vědy a co o něm jednotliví vědci soudí. Projekt osvícenství je také uveden do kontrastu s termínem osvícenství. Pak následuje krátké pojednání o povaze dvou souběžných osvícenstvích – filozofického a sociálního, přičemž oba termíny jsou důležité k pochopení termínu projekt osvícenství. Po vyjasnění klíčových termínů následuje diskuze o pohledu klíčových filozofů 18. a 20. století na svobodu jednotlivce v moderním státě. Mnoho z témat uvedených v 18. století se stává znovu předmětem diskuze ve století dvacátém. I přes pesimistický pohled na projekt osvícenství, který započal již Rousseauem a pokračuje i v současnosti, projekt osvícenství je stále aktuální.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the enlightenment project as it was discussed both in the 18th and the 20th centuries. First it attempts to briefly discuss how is the enlightenment project understood in the contemporary context of sciences and what individual scientists understand what the project might be. It is also contrasted with the term enlightenment. Than there is a brief discussion about the two enlightenments – a philosophical one and a social one. To understand the enlightenment both forms are needed. After the clarification of the key terms a discussion of the key philosophers of the 18th and 20th centuries takes place. The main topic is the freedom of an individual in the modern state as it was formulated back in the 18th century. Many of the topics stated back there were again an issue in the modern age. Despite the pessimistic view of the enlightenment project which began with Rousseau and was transferred into our times the project still continues.
