The beginnings of oscillographic art in the 1950's and 1960's

Abstract:

Oscilografické umění 50. a 60. let se neslo v duchu bádání, hledání nových uměleckých cest, objevování nových technologií, ale také v duchu fascinace dříve nespatřenými obrazci, jež vznikaly na obrazovkách osciloskopů. Práce popisuje počátky oscilografického umění v Evropě a USA, věnuje se pionýrům computer-artu a video-artu. Rozebírá práci Bena F. Laposkyho, Mary E. Bute, Herberta W. Frankeho, Johna Whitneyho, Hy Hirshe a dalších.

Abstract:

Oscillographic art was in its craddle in 1950’s and 1960’s. Many artists of this post-war era were searching for and discovering new art forms, new ways to make art of light. They were open to every new technology, and when the first army analogue oscilloscopes landed by the shelves of surplus stores, many of them took a chance to start working with them. Those artists, i.e. Ben F. Laposky, Mary E. Bute, Herbert W. Franke, John Whitney and others, were fascinated by the pictures displayed on the CRT screens, and their work started a new era of art – the computer and video art. Thesis is dedicated to those pioneer artists, being a compilation of their early oscillographic works.
