Analysis of the czech automotive industry from the beginning of the global economic crisis in 2008 to the coronavirus pandemic

Abstract:

Diplomová práce analyzuje český automobilový průmysl v období globální ekonomické krize 2008-2009 a v období koronavirové pandemie, jak z pohledu nabídkové, tak i poptávkové strany. Teoretická část práce zahrnuje dva hlavní pilíře, kde je největší důraz kladen na koncepty teorie hospodářských cyklů a spotřebitelského chování. Pro zpracování praktické části práce byly využity tři rozdílné přístupy. Nejprve se autor zabývá analýzou automobilového průmyslu z nabídkové strany a zkoumá vývoj vybraných sektorových ukazatelů napříč sledovaným obdobím. Získané výsledky, analyzující dopady ekonomických krizí, jsou následně komparovány a s jejich pomocí je potvrzena primární hypotéza práce, která sděluje, že „automobilový sektor byl zasažen více koronavirovou pandemií než krizí z let 2008-2010“. Toto tvrzení je navíc podloženo i zjištěními, která vyplývají z provedené případové studie. Následně je s pomocí dotazníkového šetření verifikována i sekundární hypotéza, jenž tvrdí, že „koronavirová pandemie svým průběhem výrazně změnila preference spotřebitelů ohledně koupě automobilu v roce 2021, ve srovnání s prvním rokem pandemie“. V době psaní diplomové práce neexistovala dle autorových informací žádná studie, jejímž cílem by byla snaha o komparaci dopadů a charakterizaci odlišností vybraných krizí na český automobilový sektor.

Abstract:

The thesis analyses the Czech automotive industry in the period of the global economic crisis 2008-2009 and the period of the coronavirus pandemic, both from the supply and demand side. The theoretical part of the thesis includes two main pillars, where the most significant emphasis is placed on the concepts of business cycle theory and consumer behaviour. Three different approaches have been used for the practical part of the thesis. First, the author analyses the automotive industry from the supply side and examines the evolution of selected sectoral indicators across the period under consideration. The results obtained, analysing the impact of economic crises, are then compared and used to confirm the primary hypothesis of the paper, which states that "the automotive sector was more affected by the coronavirus pandemic than by the 2008-2010 crisis". This claim is further supported by the findings that emerge from the case study. Subsequently, the secondary hypothesis that “the course of the coronavirus pandemic has significantly changed consumer preferences for buying a car in 2021 compared to the first year of the pandemic” is verified through a questionnaire survey. At the time of writing the thesis, to the author's knowledge, there was no study to compare the impacts and characterise the differences between the selected crises on the Czech automotive sector.
