Presentation of Fitness Masculinity on Instagram

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce řeší téma maskulinity ve fitness centrech. Použitím kvalitativní obsahové analýzy (Cronick, 1997, Silverman, 2005, Hammersley, Atkinson, 1995) zkoumá příspěvky vybraných instagramových účtů za účelem interpretace a analytického zkoumání konceptů, které se vážou k maskulinitám. Práce nejdříve vysvětluje problematiku konceptualizace maskulinit a jejich zasazení do genderové hierarchie (Connell a Messerschmidt 2005), poté se zaměřuje na průzkum fitness kultury (Sassatelli 2010), do které jsou maskulinity v této práci zasazeny a také na průzkum digitálního prostoru, který slouží pro bakalářskou práci jako forma terénního prostředí. Cílem práce je analyzovat, jak se vybraní instagramoví uživatelé v příspěvcích sebe-prezentují, a jak se jejich performance váže ke kultuře fitness a k maskulinitám. Výsledkem práce je analýza všech zvolených instagramových profilů skrze interpretaci vybraných příspěvků.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis explores the topic of masculinity in fitness centers. Through the use of qualitative content analysis (Cronick, 1997, Silverman, 2005, Hammersley, Atkinson, 1995), it examines the posts of selected Instagram accounts focused on exercising in fitness centers, with the aim of interpreting and analytically exploring the concepts related to masculinities. The thesis first explains the issue of conceptualizing masculinities and their placement within gender hierarchy (Connell and Messerschmidt, 2005), then focuses on examination fitness culture (Sassatelli, 2010), in which masculinities are situated in this work, as well as on exploring the digital space, which serves as the field environment for this study. The goal of the thesis is to analyze how selected Instagram users present themselves in their posts, and how their performance relates to fitness culture and masculinities. The result of the thesis is the analysis of all selected Instagram profiles through the interpretation of selected posts.
