Translating strategies applied in Chicano novel The House on Mango Street during its translation to Spanish La casa en Mango Street

Abstract:

In my diploma thesis I am dealing with the complexity of translation of realia and the particular translation strategies employed in the process of translation in translation of literary works from one language to another, specifically in the translation from Chicano English to Spanish. Chicano literature is distinguished by its hybridity, diversity and complexity, as it reflects the cultural and social elements of two different languages and two distinct cultures, English and Spanish, the cultures of Mexico and the United States of America. For the analysis of the selected translation strategies, the Chicano novel The House on Mango Street written by Sandra Cisneros and its Spanish translation, La casa en Mango Street, translated by Elena Poniatowska and Juan Antonio Ascendio was chosen. The aim of this thesis is to provide a comprehensive view of this issue and to analyse and classify the particular translation strategies of the realia employed in the process of translation.

Abstract:

Ve své diplomové práci se zabývám problematikou překladu reálií a jednotlivými překladatelskými strategiemi, které jsou využívány překladateli při překladu literárního díla, konkrétně při překladu z chicanské angličtiny do španělštiny. Chicanská literatura vyniká svou hybriditou, různorodostí a komplexností, jelikož se v ní odráží a mísí sociokulturní prvky dvou různých jazyků a kultur, angličtiny a španělštiny a Mexika a Spojených států amerických. Pro analýzu vybraných překladatelských strategií bylo zvoleno dílo chicanské autorky Sandry Cisneros, The House on Mango Street, a překlad tohoto díla do španělštiny, kniha La casa en Mango Street, kterou přeložili Elena Poniatowska a Juan Antonio Ascendio. Cílem diplomové práce je poskytnout komplexní pohled na tuto problematiku a analyzovat a klasifikovat konkrétní překladatelské strategie, které byly využity v překladatelském procesu při překladu jednotlivých sociokulturních prvků.
