Význam mokradí pre faunu, flóru aj ľudí je všeobecne známy. Počet hrozieb, ktorým čelia, je však známy menej. Od eutrofizácie, zasypávania, odklonu toku a budovania priehrad až po globálne otepľovanie, odvodňovanie a premenu na poľnohospodársku pôdu, to všetko vedie k zmeneným alebo zničeným biotopom.
