Supramolecular Interactions of Cucurbit (n)urils with Organic Cation

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá supramolekulární chemií kukurbit[n]urilů (CB[n]), pozoruhodných makrocyklů s vlastnostmi, které se výrazně liší od dalších běžně užívaných makrocyklů. Byla zkoumána interakce CB[n] s různými hosty za účelem zjištění vazebného uspořádání a dalších supramolekulárních vlastností získaných komplexů. V závislosti na typu zvolených hostů je práce rozdělena do tří kapitol. V první části byla syntetizována řada lineárních karboxylových kyselin ukončených a obou koncích pyridiniovými solemi. Získané kyseliny byly posléze komplexovány s CB[7] a CB[8]. Za použití 1H NMR byl určen vazebný mód vzniklého komplexu a poté byl učiněn pokus o destabilizaci získaných pseudorotaxanů pomocí změny pH. Požadovaný efekt byl pozorován u jednoho ze čtyř zkoumaných komplexů, čímž bylo dosaženo zamýšleného molekulárního přepínače. Druhý projekt se zabýval vlivem CB[6] na distribuci elektronové hustoty v aromatických systémech, nacházejících se v blízkosti karbonylového portálu CB[6]. Bylo syntetizováno 15 hostů založených na imidazoliovém a pyridiniovém motivu. Při komplexaci získaných hostů s CB[6] bylo zjištěno, že karbonylový portál odpuzuje Π-elektrony aromatického systému, který se nachází v blízkosti karbonylových kyslíků a elektronová hustota se přesunuje do vzdálené oblasti aromátu. Cílem třetího projektu bylo zkoumat interakce hostů založených na bispyridylethylenu a hostitelů odvozených od CB[6]. Byly zkoumány fotochemické reakce získaných komplexů za různých vlnových délek a za přítomnosti různých koncentrací NaCl. Dále byl připraven rotaxan založený na zmíněných komponentách a pomocí pseudorotaxanových analogů bylo objasněno jeho supramolekulární chování.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the supramolecular chemistry of cucurbit[n]urils (CB[n]), remarkable macrocycle with unique features among the macrocycle family. The interaction between CB[n] and various guests was investigated in order to determine the binding modes and describe the other supramolecular features of the obtained complexes. The work can be divided into three sections based on the types of guest chosen to interact with CB[n] macrocycles. In the first part linear carboxylic acids termined on both ends with the pyridinium units were synthesized. The obtained acids were used as guests for CB[7] and CB[8] macrocycles. The binding modes of the complex were determined using 1H NMR spectroscopy. Then an attempt was made to destabilize the complex by the means of changing the pH. Desired effect was observed in one of the four investigated guests, in which case the desired molecular switch was obtained. The influence of the CB[6] on the distribution of electron density over the aromatic system of the guest in close proximity of the CB[6] carbonyl portal was investigated in the second project. Fifteen guests based on imidazolium, pyridinium and pyrazinium salts were synthesized and their interaction with CB[6] were investigated. It was concluded that the carbonyl rim repels the Π-electrons in its close proximity and the electron density of the heterocycle is shifted to the far-region of the aromatic ring. Third project was concerned with the interaction of bispyridylethylene guests and CB[6] based hosts. The photochemistry of the obtained complexes was investigated at different wavelengths. The influence of presence of different NaCl concentrations on the photochemical behavior of the complex was also investigated. Moreover the rotaxane containing byspyridylethylene motif and CB[6] was constructed and its supramolecular behavior was explained using pseudorotaxane analogues.
