The Position and Meanings of Qualifying Adjectives. A Contrastive Study of Contemporary Parallel Literary Texts.

Abstract:

The topic of our master thesis is ?The Position and Meanings of Qualifying Adjectives. A Contrastive Study of Contemporary Parallel Literary Texts.? As a linguistic corpus, we have chosen a very famous piece of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Courrier sud including 153 pages and the czech version Kurýr na jih (80 pages) translated by Marie Janů. In the first chapter, we present the general theoretical information relating to the qualifying adjectives. More precisely, we focuse on the division of the qualifying adjectives per subcategories, the form in accordance with the gendre and the number, the accordance of the qualifying adjectives, the degree of intensity and the comparison of the qualifying adjectives, the possibilities of functions in the sentence, their place in the sentence and the terms completing the qualifying adjective. In the second chapter, we target the contrastive study. In the first part of this study, we present the main differences between the french and czech language and the main differences between the french adjective and its czech equivalent. In the second part, we mention the particular examples of the qualifying adjectives placed in front of the noun, eventually behind the noun and we analyse them in light of semantics and stylistics. In the third part, we analyse the translation processes. The analysis is divided into three parts, as well as the corpus. At the end of each part, we summarize by the help of exact numbers the use of these translation processes.

Le th?me de notre mémoire de maîtrise est ? La position et la signification des adjectifs qualificatifs. Étude contrastive des textes littéraires contemporains parall?les ?. Comme le corpus de notre travail, nous avons choisi l??uvre cél?bre d?Antoine de Saint-Exupéry intitulé Courrier sud qui compte 153 pages et sa traduction tch?que Kurýr na jih, traduite par Marie Janů, de 80 pages. Dans le premier chapitre, nous présentons les généralités concernant l?adjectif qualificatif, cela veut dire que nous nous concentrons sur les classes des adjectifs qualificatifs, les formes des adjectifs qualificatifs selon le genre et le nombre, l?accord des adjectifs qualificatifs, les degrés d?intensité et de comparaison des adjectifs qualificatifs, les fonctions des adjectifs qualificatifs dans une phrase, la place des adjectifs qualificatifs et le groupe adjectivale. Dans le deuxi?me chapitre, nous nous orientons vers l?étude contrastive. Dans la premi?re partie, nous présentons les différences principales entre la langue française et la langue tch?que et les différences principales entre les adjectifs français et leurs équivalents tch?ques. Dans la deuxi?me partie, nous citons les cas particuliers des adjectifs qualificatifs antéposés ou bien postposés et les analysons du point de vue sémantique et stylistique. Dans la troisi?me partie, nous nous concentrons sur l?analyse des procédés de traduction. Cette analyse est divisée en trois parties, selon les parties du livre. ? la fin de chaque partie, nous employons des chiffres exactes pour démontrer l?emploi des procédés de traduction.
