The Image of Barack Obama in British and Czech Media: A Comparison

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the image of Barack Obama in two Czech and two British broadsheets. The Independent and The Guardian were chosen from the British broadsheets and Lidové noviny and Právo from the Czech broadsheets. The thesis is divided into two main parts. Part I concentrates on Obama?s life and political career and also takes a look at his image in media and gives some opinions of experts. Part II concentrates on collecting information about Obama and monitors how and in what ways the given broadsheets have presented his person. He was most often discussed in connection with the upcoming election, especially with a focus on his domestic and foreign policy, television debates and voters. The goal of this thesis is to discover how and in what ways Barack Obama has been presented at the end of his first electoral period and compare his image in broadsheets.

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá prezentací Baracka Obamy ve dvou českých a dvou britských denících. Z britských deníků byly vybrány The Independent a The Guardian a z českých deníků Lidové noviny a Právo. Bakalářská práce je rozdělena na dvě hlavní části. První část se zaměřuje na Obamův život a politickou kariéru a také nahlíží na jeho prezentaci v médiích a předkládá názory odborníků. Druhá část se zaměřuje na sběr informací o Obamovi a sleduje, jak a v jakých souvislostech dané deníky prezentovaly jeho osobu. Nejčastěji se o něm hovořilo v souvislosti s nadcházejícími volbami, konkrétně se zaměřením na jeho domácí a zahraniční politiku, televizní debaty a voliče. Cílem práce je zjistit, jak a v jakých souvislostech byl Barack Obama prezentován na konci svého prvního volebního období a porovnat jeho prezentaci v denících.
