Ngugi wa Thiong'o, Theory and Practice of Abrogation

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce zkoumá strategie abrogace, tzn., že původní obyvatelé odmítají jazyk a kulturu kolonizátorů, a apropriace, což znamená modelování cizího jazyka pro potřeby původního obyvatelstva, v africké literatuře. Skrze zkoumání postojů afrických spisovatelů vůči těmto postupům a jejich pohledů na používání anglického jazyka jako prostředku komunikace s vnějším světem je hlavní pozornost upřena na keňského spisovatele a aktivistu Ngugi wa Thiong’o. Zkoumáním Ngugiho literární tvorby a tvorby jiných afrických kritiků a spisovatelů bakalářská práce hodnotí, zda padá Ngugiho výzva k abrogaci na úrodnou půdu. Také hodnotí, zda se Ngugiho negativní postoj k anglickému jazyku jako cizímu jazyku Afriky a lidem, kteří ho na africký kontinent přivezli, postupem času stupňuje, nebo snižuje. První kapitola bakalářské práce definuje pojmy, jako jsou „postkoloniální literatura“, „Angličtina“ a „angličtina“, a uvádí, co přesně abrogace a apropriace cizího jazyka znamená. V neposlední řadě poskytuje přehled kritické diskuze ohledně otázek abrogace a apropriace v postkoloniálním kontextu. Cílem druhé kapitoly je představit Ngugiho život a jeho tvorbu prostřednictvím krátké historie jeho praxe v abrogaci. Ve třetí kapitole je pozornost zaměřena na Ngugiho knihu Decolonising the mind, ve které se zabývá argumenty pro a proti výše zmíněných strategií. Kapitola rovněž porovnává jeho argumenty s argumenty dalších afrických kritiků a spisovatelů. Poslední kapitola hlouběji zkoumá Ngugiho literární práce, jejich témata, jazyk a formu a demonstruje strategie abrogace a apropriace použité v jeho díle spolu s kritikou post koloniální Keni.

Abstract:

This thesis examines strategies of abrogation - that is, a native populace rejecting a colonial power's language and culture - and appropriation - molding an alien language to the needs of natives - especially in the light of African literature. In exploring African writers' attitudes, both towards these approaches and their views on using English as a means of communication with the outer world, the main focus will fall on the work of Kenyan writer and activist Ngugi wa Thiong'o. By having a close look at both his literary work and that of different African critics and writers, this paper will result in an evaluation of whether Ngugi's call for abrogation falls on fertile ground. It will also consider whether Ngugi's hostility to English - an alien language to Africa, after all - and his animosity to the people who brought it to the African continent, increases or decreases over the course of time. The first chapter of this thesis provides a definition of terms such as 'post-colonial literature’, 'English' and 'english' and defines what abrogation and appropriation of a foreign language really is. Last but not least, it provides an overview of the critical debate concerning the notions of abrogation and appropriation in a post-colonial context. The second chapter's aim is to introduce Ngugi's life and his creative output through a brief history of his practice of abrogation. In the third chapter, the attention is focused on Ngugi's collection of essays Decolonizing the Mind, in terms of finding arguments for and against the strategies of abrogation, and its comparison with the critical and theoretical works or statements of other authors. Finally, the last chapter examines Ngugi's literary works, its themes, language and form in terms of postcolonial critique in greater depth, and demonstrates strategies of abrogation and appropriation within them.
