Psychometric properties of PhoPhiKat-45 questionnaire for identification of gelotophobia, gelotophilia and katagelasticism

Abstract:

Cílem naší práce bylo především ověřit psychometrické charakteristiky české verze nového dotazníku PhoPhiKat-45 určeného k měření gelotofobie (strachu ze zesměšnění), gelotofilie (potěšení ze zesměšnění) a katagelasticismu (potěšení ze zesměšňování druhých lidí). Byl proveden překlad dotazníku PhoPhiKat-45. Soubor tvořilo 634 studentů brněnských univerzit (31 % mužů a 69 % žen). Průměrný věk respondentů byl 22 let. V naší studii byla v souvislosti s výzkumem gelotofobie poprvé použita nezkrácená verze inventáře NEO, která zahrnuje jednotlivé subškály. Byla vyčíslena reliabilia dotazníku PhoPhiKat-45 hodnotou α 0,84. Faktorová analýza potvrdila jednodimenzionalitu škál dotazníku. Faktorová struktura jednotlivých položek odpovídala německé verzi dotazníku PhoPhiKat-45. Psychometrické charakteristiky lze tedy považovat za dobré. Hranici indikující přinejmenším mírnou přítomnost gelotofobických příznaků překročilo téměř 12 % respondentů. Muži dosahují na škále gelotofilie a katagelasticismu signifikantně vyššího skóru než ženy, a u studentů ekonomie je zjištěn signifikantně vyšší skór gelotofilie a katagelasticismu než u studentů psychologie. Z výsledků korelací jednotlivých škál je patrná negativní korelace škály gelotofobie s gelotofilií a pozitivní korelace škály katagelasticismus s gelotofilií. Byla potvrzena vysoká korelace škály gelotofobie se škálou neuroticismus, silná negativní korelace se škálou extroverze. U škály gelotofilie je nejvýznamnější korelace se škálou extroverze (pozitivní) a neuroticismus (negativní). Katagelasticismus koreluje se škálou přívětivost (negativně) a extraverze (pozitivně).

Abstract:

The prime aim of the present study is to verify psychometric properties of the Czech version of the PhoPhiKat-45 questionnaire, which is intended for the assessment of gelotophobia (the fear of being laughed at), gelotophilia (the joy of being laughed at) and katagelasticism (the joy of laughing at others). The PhoPhiKat-45 questionnaire was translated into Czech language. The sample consisted of 634 university students (31% men and 69% women). The mean age of the participants was 22. In association with the gelotophobia, present study used the complete NEO inventory that includes subscales, for the first time. The reliability analysis indicated that the Czech version yielded a satisfactory internal consistency (α = 0.84). Factor analysis confirmed one-dimensionality of the questionnaire scales. Factor structure of items corresponded to the German version of the PhoPhiKat-45 questionnaire. Hence, the translation yielded good psychometric properties. In the present sample 12% of the persons exceeded the cut-off scores for at least slight expressions of the fear of being laughed at. Males reached a significantly higher score in gelotophilia and katagelasticism than women. Students of economics tended to score higher in gelotophilia and katagelasticism than students of psychology. The results of scales correlation suggest a perceptible negative correlation of gelotophobia with gelotophilia and a positive correlation of katagelasticism with gelotophilia. A high correlation of gelotophobia with neuroticism, and a strong negative correlation with extraversion was confirmed. The strongest correlation in the case of gelotophilia is with extraversion (positive) and neuroticism (negative). Katagelasticism correlates with agreeableness (negative) and extraversion (positive).
