Lone Wolfs: Islamist Terorrism in Twenty-First Century Europe

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá pachateli islamistických teroristických útoků, ke kterým došlo na území členských států Evropské unie v letech 2009–2019, kteří takovýto útok realizovali sami, s cílem vyčlenit z nich ty pachatele, které lze považovat za osamělé vlky. Následně práce hodnotí, jakou bezpečnostní hrozbu islamističtí osamělí vlci a jejich útoky představují vůči občanům Evropské unie. Sledované období je stanoveno s ohledem na pokrytí událostí vývoje islamistické organizace Daeš, událostí arabského jara a občanské války v Sýrii, stejně tak s ohledem na rozvoj užití počítačových technologií pro šíření propagandy násilných islamistických organizací, která apeluje na jedince, aby útočil proti domnělým nepřátelům bez vnějších rozkazů a na vlastní odpovědnost. Práce je založena na základě kvantitativního výzkumu, při kterém byla užita analýza veřejných sekundárních dat převzatých ze statistických ročenek Europolu zabývajících se terorismem a odborných a novinových článků zabývajících se konkrétními teroristickými útoky a jejich pachateli. Práce dochází k závěru, že islamistický terorismus osamělých vlků nepředstavuje tak skrytou a nebezpečnou hrozbu pro občany EU, jak je popisováno médii, pachatelé těchto útoků komunikují se svým okolím, nepůsobí zcela skrytě, jejich plány nebývají příliš sofistikované. Pokud pachatel samotným útokem nespáchal sebevraždu, byl na místě zastřelen, zadržen nebo byl později dopaden bezpečnostními složkami.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is focused on single perpetrators of islamist terrorist attacks, which were performed between 2009–2019 in the European Union, with the main goal to separate the ones who could be considered as lone wolf terrorists. The bachelor thesis then evaluates how big is the threat for citizens of the EU caused by islamist lone wolfs. The examined period is chosen with regard to covering events of development of the islamist organisation Daesh, events of the Arab Spring and events of the Syrian Civil War, as well with regards to covering growth of the use of the computer technologies to share violent islamist propaganda, which calls individuals to act alone against alleged enemies without any external commands on own responsibility. The bachelor thesis is found on metodology, which was developed in connection with lone-wolf terrorism concept, and is also found on the quantitative research of publicly available secondary data from the statistical annual report on terrorism issued by Europol agency and from research papers and newspaper articles focused on specific terrorist attack and its perpetrators. The bachelor thesis comes to conlusion that islamist terror of lone wolves does not represent such a hidden and dangerous threat to citizens of the European Union in a way how it’s described by the media. Perpetrators of these attacks communicate with their surroundings, they don’t act completely hidden, their plans aren’t so sophisticated. All perpetrators died due to their attack or were killed or detained on the spot or were apprehended afterwards by the security forces.
