Ethical dilemmas and burn-out syndrome among social workers working with people in terminal stage

Abstract:

The main aim of the thesis is: "how the experiences with ethical dilemmas relate to the burn-out syndrome among social workers working with people in the terminal stage". Within the theoretical part, I did a conceptualisation of key terms such as ethics and morality, ethical issues and dilemmas as well as an analysis of theoretical starting points, followed by connecting to the construct of social workers experiences with clients in the terminal stage. In addition to mentioned terms, there will also be defined other terms arising from the main research questions in the theoretical part. For this reason, I consider it necessary to clarify first how I understand ethical dilemmas. Practically, I will try to include the theoretical basis, which is elaborated in the next section, into my research, which I will present in the empirical part of the thesis. In order to understand what is the content of the ethical dilemmas that social workers are experiencing in their work with the dying, I would chose the methodology of narrative research. All in all, as is apparent from the above, this work demonstrates the intention to use the acquired knowledge to strengthen attention to the issue of how ethical dilemmas relate to the burn-out syndrome among social workers working with people in the terminal stage. One of the aspects of ethical decision, that social workers have control over, is their own moral development and view on professional duties. Social workers are able to make decisions that increase or decrease the burn out syndrome.

Abstract:

Hlavným cieľom dizertačnej práce je: „ako prežívanie etických problémov a dilem súvisí s prežívaním syndrómu vyhorenia sociálnych pracovníkov pracujúcich s ľuďmi v terminálnom štádiu“ V rámci teoretickej časti som urobila konceptualizáciu kľúčových pojmov ako sú etika a morálka, etické problémy a dilemy ako aj analýzu teoretických východísk s následným prepojením na konštrukciu prežívania sociálnymi pracovníkmi s klientmi v terminálnom štádiu. V teoretickej časti budú vedľa zmienených pojmov budú vymedzené aj ďalšie pojmy, ktoré vyplývajú z hlavnej výskumnej otázky. Z tohto dôvodu považujem za nevyhnutné najprv vyjasniť ako chápem etické dilemy. Prakticky sa budem snažiť potom teoretické východisko, ktoré je rozpracované v nasledujúcej časti zahrnúť do svojho výskumu, ktoré budem prezentovať v empirickej časti dizertačnej práce. V snahe porozumieť tomu aký je obsah etických dilem, ktoré sociálni pracovníci prežívajú vo svojej práci s umierajúcimi by som zvolila metodiku naratívneho výskumu. Celkovo vzaté, tak ako vyplýva z vyššie uvedeného táto práca predstavuje zámer využiť získané poznatky k posilneniu pozornosti ako prežívanie etických dilem súvisí s prežívaním syndrómu vyhorenia sociálnych pracovníkov pracujúcich s ľuďmi v terminálnom štádiu. Jedným z aspektov etického rozhodovania, nad ktorým sociálni pracovníci majú kontrolu, je ich vlastní morálny vývoj a pohľad na profesionálne povinnosti. Sociálni pracovníci môžu učiniť také rozhodnutie, ktoré zvýši alebo zníži riziko „syndrómu vyhorenia“.
