Opportunities for oral interaction and developing communicative competence in teaching English with an interactive board

Abstract:

Předkládaná disertační práce se zabývá výzkumem aktuálního tématu rozvoje komunikační kompetence v ústní interakci při výuce angličtiny s interaktivní tabulí. Cílem šetření bylo zjistit, vytvářejí-li učitelé žákům příležitosti k ústní interakci a navozují-li v hodinách anglického jazyka komunikační situace. Pozornost je zaměřena na to, zda a případně jak jsou ústní interakce v cílovém jazyce a její nácvik ovlivněny současným používání interaktivní tabule. Výzkumu byly podrobeny s tímto související jevy a oblasti – formy interakce, které učitelé používali při vyučování, typy činností, ke kterým IWB sloužila, technické úkony, které na ní učitel či žáci prováděli. Výzkumným nástrojem bylo kvalitativní strukturované pozorování ve vybraných školách v České republice, které vyústilo v analýzu observačních záznamů. Výsledky analýzy pak byly následně konfrontovány se závěry některých zahraničních a domácích výzkumných studií. Cílem kvantitativní části výzkumu byla analýza cvičení v tištěných a interaktivních učebnicích Way to Win, která měla ukázat, v jakém poměru jsou zastoupena cvičení jazyková, prekomunikační a komunikační, a zda se tento poměr mění v jednotlivých úrovních učebnice. K nejdůležitějším zjištěním, jež výsledky naznačují, patří, že učitelé, kteří neuplatňují principy komunikačního přístupu a jejichž výuka nemá činnostní charakter, používají interaktivní tabuli velmi tradičním způsobem a moderní technologie nijak nepřispívá ke změně jejich vyučovacího stylu. Výsledky výzkumu byly kriticky zhodnoceny a byla navržena možná řešení i směr dalšího zkoumání.

Abstract:

The presented dissertation thesis deals with oral interaction and communication in lessons of English as a foreign language taught with an interactive whiteboard. The aim of the research was to find out if teachers provide opportunities for learners to interact orally and if they create communication situations in lessons of English. It aims to find out if and how the oral interaction in a target language and its practice are influenced while an interactive board is being used. The research focused on related areas – patterns of interaction which were applied by the teachers in the observed lessons, types of activities and technical operations performed on the interactive board by teachers and learners. The research instrument was qualitative structured observation carried out in chosen basic schools in the Czech Republic which lead to analysis of the observation records. The results were consequently confronted with the findings of some foreign and Czech research studies. The aim of the quantitative part of the research was analysis of exercises in printed and digital versions of the textbook series Way to Win which was to reveal the ratio of language, precommunicative and communicative exercises and change of this ratio in individual parts of the series. One of the most important findings resulting from the observations is that teachers who do not apply the principles of communication approach use an interactive board in a very traditional way and modern technologies do not contribute to the change of their teaching style. The research results were critically evaluated and potential solutions as well as possibilities for further research were suggested.
