Guantánamo Diary: a Case Study and Translation Comparison

Abstract:

Cílem práce je zhodnotit a porovnat dva nezávislé překlady téže knihy nazvané Guantánamo Diary, kterou napsal Mohamedou Ould Slahi. Knihy, která byla zveřejněná po šesti letech soudních sporů a jednání ve snaze zpřístupnit Slahiho rukopis veřejnosti. Práce se zabývá dvěma překlady, a to slovenskou knihu Denník Guantánama: Príbeh väzňa, a českým titulem Deník z Guantánama. V první části práce se zaměřuji pouze na zdrojový text obsahující mnoho zajímavých lingvistických problémů. První z nich vyplývá ze skutečnosti, že Mohamedou pochází z Mauritánie a až do svého věznění v Guantánamu neumí anglicky. Jeho mateřštinou a stejně tak způsobem myšlení je arabština, nicméně celá kniha je napsaná v angličtině, což přináší několik mezikulturních a jazykových problémů. Mohamedou navíc přichází do styku s různými postavami, ať už záměrně nebo nechtěně. Na počátku příběhu je to jeho rozvětvená rodina, Mauritánie a místní zvyky, a samozřejmě i jazykový registr, který je zcela odlišný od toho, s jakým se Slahi setkává během své pozdější anabáze. Je ironií, že když je unesen a vyslýchán Jordánci, neztrácí svůj status lidské bytosti, což se odráží v jazyce, jeho tónu i rejstříku. Až poté je nakonec zbaven všeho, s výjimkou svého vlastního života. Dále se v této části práce zabývám také transkripcí a transliterací, protože mnohá vlastní jména byla přejata z arabštiny do angličtiny. Konečně také popisuji určité problémy týkající se rodu, skloňování, časování a dalších gramatických / lingvistických otázek vyvstávajících na pozadí černých čar, které cenzurují Mohamedův text. Druhá část práce se zaměřuje na českou a slovenskou verzi. Existence dvou nezávislých překladů ve dvou velmi podobných sociokulturních a lingvistických kontextech dává velkou příležitost k podrobné analýze textů a jejich srovnání. Z tohoto důvodu jsem použil Systémový model pro deskriptivní překladatelská studia, který vytvořil Jeremy Munday a který vychází z Hallidayovy Systémové funkční gramatiky (SFG) spojující myšlenky a nástroje systémové funkční lingvistiky a korpusové lingvistiky s analýzou kulturního kontextu. V rámci analýzy tudíž vytvářím lingvistický profil zdrojového textu a porovnávám jej s odpovídajícím profilem textu cílového. Identifikací posunů je následně vytvořen profil zdrojového textu. Celý postup poskytuje dostatek materiálu a údajů pro posouzení a porovnání obou překladů téže knihy z hlediska problematiky překladatelských studií.

Abstract:

The objective of the thesis is to assess and compare two independent translations of the same book, Guantánamo Diary, originally written by Mohamedou Ould Slahi and published after six years of litigation and negotiations of Mohamedou’s attorneys to have his manuscript cleared for public release. The thesis deals with two of the translations, namely the Slovak Denník z Guantánama: Príbeh väzňa and the Czech Deník z Guantánama. In the first part of the thesis, I focus solely on the source text with many interesting linguistic issues. Firstly, Mohamedou comes from Mauritania and until his detention in Guantánamo, he had not spoken any English whatsoever. Although his mother tongue is Arabic and so is his way of thinking, the whole book is written in English, which brings to life several intercultural and interlingual peculiarities. Moreover, there are various characters Mohamedou comes in contact with in the book, both deliberately and unwillingly. At first, it is his large family, Mauritanian and with the local customs and, of course, a language register that is completely different from what Slahi has to face during his later odyssey. Ironically enough, when he is abducted and interrogated by the Jordanians, he does not lose his status as a human being, which is reflected in the language, its tone as well as register. It is only afterward that he is deprived of everything barring his very life. Further in this part of the thesis, I also deal with transcription, sometimes even transliteration issues as many place and personal names in the book were taken from Arabic into English, which had to be accounted for when transcribing them into Czech. And finally, I describe certain problems related to gender, declension, conjugation and other grammatical / linguistic issues in the light of the black-bar redactions censoring Mohamedou’s text. The second part of the thesis focuses on both the Czech and Slovak versions. The existence of two independent translations in two very similar sociocultural and linguistic contexts presents a great chance to give the texts, including the source one, a thorough analysis for their better comparison. For this purpose, I decided to employ the Systemic Model for Descriptive Translation Studies developed by Jeremy Munday and based on Halliday’s Systemic functional grammar (SFG), which brings together ideas and tools from systemic functional linguistics and corpus linguistics with an analysis of the cultural context. In the course of the analysis, a linguistic profile of the source text is produced and compared to the corresponding profile for the target text. By identifying the shifts, the profile of the source text is built. The whole procedure provides enough material and data for the assessment and comparison of the two translations of the same book from the point of translation studies.
