Storybird and its Usage in Teaching Writing to Czech Upper Secondary Learners of English as a Foreign Language

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá použitím aplikace s názvem Storybird, která se zaměřuje na psaní příběhů a zlepšování dovednosti psaní u studentů při výuce anglického jazyka. Cílem diplomové práce je určit, zda je Storybird užitečný nástroj, ve kterém se rovněž snadno orientuje; a dále, zda může sloužit ke zvýšení motivace studentů při výuce psaní. Další otázkou bylo, jaké jsou z pohledu studentů výhody a nevýhody při používání Storybird v hodinách angličtiny. První polovina práce se zaměřuje na vysvětlení nejdůležitějších termínů a záležitostí týkajících se psaní, jakožto i použití technologie ve výuce angličtiny. Představuje podstatné rysy Storybird a poskytuje jeho hodnocení. Druhá polovina práce popisuje provedený výzkum. Výzkumným nástrojem této práce byl dotazník, který byl použit k zjištění názorů studentů na práci s aplikací Storybird. Dalším nástrojem bylo pozorování, které výzkumu dodalo druhý úhel pohledu. Výsledky výzkumu poskytly seznam různorodých výhod a nevýhod, výhody převažují. Data ohledně motivace neprokázaly jednoznačné výsledky a bylo by nutné provést další zkoumání, aby byly výsledky prokazatelnější. Ukázalo se však, že studenti považují Storybird za užitečný a velmi snadno ovladatelný nástroj, což bylo potvrzeno i pozorováním. Toto zjištění společně s převažujícími výhodami pomohlo k dosažení závěru, že Storybird je prospěšný nástroj k použití se studenty středních škol studujícími angličtinu jako cizí jazyk.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the usage of Storybird, a tool, which focuses on writing stories and developing students' writing skills in teaching English. The aim of the thesis is to determine whether Storybird is a useful, easy-to-navigate tool and if it can serve to increase learners’ motivation to learn writing. Another question was what the benefits and disadvantages of using Storybird in English lessons from the point of view of students are. The first half of the thesis focuses on clarifying the important terminology and issues connected to writing as well as the use of technology in ELT. It shows the features of Storybird and provides an evaluation. The second half introduces the conducted research. For the research of this thesis, a questionnaire was used to find out the students’ opinions on working with Storybird. Another instrument were observations, which provided results from another perspective. The findings of the research provided a list of different advantages and disadvantages, although overall, the advantages prevail. The findings on motivation were inconclusive and more research would be necessary in order to provide straightforward claims. However, the research showed that students consider Storybird to be a useful and easy to navigate tool and the observations confirmed this view, and together with the predomination of advantages, the conclusion reached is that Storybird is a beneficial tool to be used with secondary school students studying English as a foreign language.
