About Mackinac Island in Slovak: Translating tourist information materials

Abstract:

The batchelor thesis deals with the translation of chosen parts of the tourist guide about one American island called Mackinac Island which is to be found on the official Mackinac Island´s web page http://www.mackinacisland.org/. The thesis consists of three main parts. The first part is the analysis of the English source text on the phonetic, phonological, grammatical and lexical levels and moreover, the stylistically significant features are described here. In the second part of the thesis there is to be found the Slovak translation itself. The third part comprises the commentary on translation where all the problematic parts of the translation are examined. The theoretical part of this thesis is primarily based on the book of Crystal and Davy: Investigating English Style.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá překladem dvou částí anglického turistického průvodce o americkém ostrově Mackinac Island který, lze najít na oficiálních internetových stránkách ostrova http://www.mackinacisland.org/. Práce se skládá ze tří hlavních částí. První část práce je analýza anglického textu na rovině fonetické a fonologické, gramatické i lexikální a také jsou tady popsány stylisticky signifikantní rysy. V druhé části práce je samotný překlad vybraných částí do slovenštiny. Třetí část práce tvoří komentář k překladu, ve kterém jsou rozebrány všechny překladatelské problematické místa. Teoretická část práce je založena zejména na knize Crystala a Davyho: Investigating English Style.
