Life Course and its Relationship to Current Characteristics of Personality During Older Adulthood

Abstract:

The goal of this thesis is to explore the relationship between personality traits and the life course of an individual. The main representatives of modern theories of development treat personality as one of the factors that have an impact on the life course. The proponents of the Five-Factor Model view the life course as a projection of personal traits. The theoretical part of this thesis offers an integrated view of theese two standing points, combining their main benefits. The empirical part is designed to explore the relationship between some variables of the life course and current characteristics of personality, while it doesn't target to determine the causality between them. Three areas of the life course are investigated: education, job carrier and family life. Each hypothesys is tested on a sample of citizens of the Czech Republic between the age of 45 and 55 (group A: n=15, group B: n=75, participants of the Longitudinal Study of Brno). In the discussion part the results of the empirical part are interpreted and the limitations of the choosen design are discussed.

Abstract:

Cieľom tejto diplomovej práce je preskúmať prepojenosť osobnostných rysov s životnou dráhou jedinca. Kým u hlavných predstaviteľov moderných teórií vývinu je osobnosť jedným z faktorov pôsobiacich na životnú dráhu jedinca, zástancovia päťfaktorového modelu operujú s konceptom životnej dráhy ako s projekčným plátnom pre osobnostné rysy. Teoretická časť tejto práce poskytuje pohľad, ktorý v sebe integruje hlavné prínosy týchto smerov. Praktická časť práce je navrhnutá tak, aby mohla skúmať vzťahy určitých premenných životnej dráhy s aktuálnymi charakteristikami osobnosti, pričom si nekladie za cieľ kauzálne vysvetlenie týchto vzťahov. Venuje sa trom oblastiam životnej dráhy jedinca: vzdelaniu, pracovnej kariéry a rodinnému životu. Jednotlivé hypotézy praktickej časti sú overené na vzorke pozostávajúcej sa zo súboru A (n=15, občania Českej republiky vo veku 45 až 55 rokov) a súboru B (n=75, participanti Brnianskeho longitudinálneho výskumu). V časti diskusia sú interpretované výsledky štúdie a uvedené limitácie výskumu.
